This Is What McGinn's Win Looks Like

The Seattle Times has mapped the November election results and finds that Mike McGinn won the mayor's race by exciting the city's spine.

Topographical evidence of a "fundamental shift"?

We know! McGinn won. Enough already. Is there such thing as a sore winner? If so you guys are the walking incarnation. How many different ways are you going to spell it out MCGINN WON. We know.

all the homeless people and feral rabbits in Discovery Park voted for Mallahan? Strange map.

Shockingly unexpected, that the more densely populated an area was, the more they voted for the more progressive of the two candidates. Unless I'm reading the geography wrong.

It's a shame, really. If the urban population over a decade ever came out with like 90%, 95% voter turnout on all Presidential, Senate, and Congressional elections, we'd completely change the nature of government.

Sadly, us lefties are generally not as mental as the crazed right, so we don't.

The other map for King County Exec is also interesting.

There's a good reason for all you Seattlites to despise those smug folks in the suburbs who strongly supported Sue Hutchison. Just look at her massive support in bastions like Mercer Island, Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond!

Keep up the hating, Seattle!

What happened to the tunnel ruining McGinn's chances? Looks like Mallahan got stomped flat in the Aurora Corridor in Ballard and points north, not much of the "he might get a few votes out of this" as expected, huh? And looks like Mallahan didn't pull off a decisive win in West Seattle except for a few of the typical-to-the-race rich enclaves.

@4: Who let you people on the internet? Don't you have forests to level and Dior handbags to fill with cocaine?

The quick way to generalize someone politics is to ask whether they can see water from their house. Water view-- conservative, no water view--progressive.

I think it's cute how we're trying to describe this top-two mayoral contest as one between a "conservative" and a "progressive".

I bet those Mallahan voters are older, and richer. I bet they live in nice houses overlooking the water views of the Cascades and the Olympics and the sound. That's why the map colors in all those zones above the shores.

Why... I could use this map to buy up properties in those purple areas and make a killing before anyone realizes how valuable they are! This is my secret treasure map to wealth and it's right there in plain sight!

Fremont, Capitol Hill, Georgetown and the U Dist ftw!

Woo Hoo!

Suck on that, stakeholders! We got the votes, you don't got the power.

Mallahan's constituents are interesting: gated communities (Madison Valley), child-haters (Laurelhurst), anti-poor NIMBY's (Magnolia), and apparently the Racoons of Seward Park.

@12: Yeah, sorry, we've already played three gigs with Gated Communities and Child-Haters.

Get your own band name.

Looking at the color key, I see that Green Lake, Elliott Bay, and Lake Washington all tied. I suppose that makes sense.

@11 - never underestimate the stakeholder power of the raccoons of Seward Park - it is only matched by the stakeholder power of the birds of Discovery Park.

Lake Washington for the don't drown me bro win.

This is hardly a fundamental shift. In all citywide elections the more progressive candidates do well in the dense "belt" of the inner city and the perceived moderate candidates do well on the water view neighborhoods. This was the case in both of Nickels' wins and in many city council races. If you were to look at past maps you would see that McGinn's win is fairly typical. His most impressive inroads were in Ballard and Columbia City.
