Revolutionary Books over in Pioneer Square is hosting reVERBerate, an open mic. And KNOCK Magazine is hosting a release party for the "Ex Issue," followed by two bands. The last time I went to a KNOCK party, it turned out to be incredibly awkward.
Elliott Bay Book Company hosts Ben & Linda Marra tonight. The Marras document Native Americans around the country. Faces from the Land: Twenty Years of Powwow Tradition is their newest book.
And the last reading is James Bach at Third Place Books. Bach is the author of Secrets of a Buccaneer-Scholar: How Self-Education and the Pursuit of Passion Can Lead to a Lifetime of Success. Bach's website, which notes that he is "the second son" of Jonathan Livingston Seagull author Richard Bach, describes "buccaneer-scholar" like this:
Just as the original buccaneers would not submit to authority in their pursuit of worldly riches, neither do us modern buccaneers yoke ourselves to authority in the pursuit of a rich education. We construct truth and meaning for ourselves.Secrets of a Buccaneer-Scholar describes how I found success in a highly technical field without the benefit or burden of a conventional education.
I'm not so sure about all the pirate imagery, but I'm a big fan of reading yourself smart.
