Anti-Abortion Amendment Coming in the Senate

Posted by on Thu, Dec 3, 2009 at 9:13 AM

From a Democratic senator, Ben Nelson of Nebraska, who wants to recreate what happened when the House of Representatives added the anti-abortion Stupak amendment to its health insurance reform bill:

"It's as identical to Stupak as it can be," Nelson told reporters on Tuesday.

As I wrote in The Stranger last month:

If anyone tries to use the upcoming U.S. Senate debate over health-insurance reform as a way to limit federal funding for abortions—as happened in the House of Representatives earlier this month—Washington State's two senators will be ready to push back hard.

Read more about their promises HERE.

Proposing a definition for the verb "stupak" (a la santorum and brownback): To impregnate a woman without plans of raising a child together and then provide no support (financial, emotional or otherwise) for her abortion.

"She thought they would be together forever, but after he stupaked her and acted as if nothing had happened, she never wanted to see him again."

Wrong state. Nelson represents Florida, not Nebraska.

The Hyde Amendment already bans federal funding of abortion. Perhaps, Eli, you could refrain from repeating this canard.
