Tiger Woods Starts Damage Control

Posted by on Wed, Dec 2, 2009 at 8:08 AM

NY Daily reports:

Tiger Woods offered a "profound apology" to his family and his fans Wednesday and admitted he had "not been true to my values" as the world's best golfer was linked to a third reported mistress.

"I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart," Woods wrote on his Web site.

Keywords: "fans," "family," and "values." What does being a great golfer have to do with being a great husband? What is the connection? To apologize to his fans only means he is apologizing to his sponsors.

I don't see why he has to apologize to anyone but his wife. But I see where you are going....he has an image and the sponsors pay a lot of money for that image.

I don't get these aldulterers. Why can't they just admit that shit up front?

"Listen baby, I love you and want to have a family with you. On occasion I will get some on the side. I promise to be discreet and safe. If you have an issue with that lets just end it here and go our separate ways."

How can it be easier to lie? . What a dummy.

Tiger is rich because he is seen as a wholesome guy.
Not because of his golfing skills.
His 'fans' are fans of him, not his golfing.
An yeah, you can bet your ass he is apologizing to his sponsors.
Tiger knows what makes his world revolve, even if Chaz doesn't...

So, isn't this one of those cases where it is no one else's business? He was not out campaigning for the sanctity of opposite marriage, not trying to hold down the gays. Basically, this episode does not really make him a huge hypocrite so it is no body's business.
That was always the slogger's reasoning. "Well, if he were not out actively trying to hold down the gays or take away rights, no one would care."
4 Posts since yesterday afternoon. Maybe it's time to stay out of his business like "we" promised.

He's got women coming out of the woodwork. Can he really just not say anything?

Is it too early to say that I don't care?

@4: Well, it IS lurid. I think many Sloggers would agree that a juicy scandal is always fun, but few would actually *condemn* him for it. I don't think we're really "in his business"; there's a difference between being entertained and actively moralizing.

That said, I don't think this story is interesting at all, beyond the ridiculous media coverage (my local news station interrupted the program for a live conference of Florida police basically announcing they were giving Woods a ticket). I admit I did smirk when scrolling past that text excerpt though.

There's some amount of hypocrisy here, because his image is so wholesome and clean-cut. Apparently, that's a work of fiction.

And besides, who doesn't love it when a guy who's making $100 million a year takes a fall?

Is his image really any more wholesome and clean cut than any other professional golfer? The whole sport is charade of decorum.

Do you accuse people who are publicly meek or timid of being hypocrites if they are sexually aggressive with their partners?

I am so glad the personal lives of our celebrities warrant so much news coverage. Sure beats dealing with the real world and our decent into neo-feudalism!

@9, sure, it's hypocrisy. Not "capital H" hyoocrisy, but when you're making untold millions a year off of that clean-cut image, and it's obviously fake, I don't know what else you'd call it.

His image is wholesome because he worked so hard to keep his life private. That something leaks out does not make him a hypocrite. This is a non-story, and it will not keep me from watching him play.

For all we know his wife is a cuckold (female cuckold?). If that's the case is he supposed to go around with his image being "Hey, I sleep around and my wife is down?"

Of course not, that would be TMI, and he couldn't make a living. One of the disadvantages of being a public figure is that you are always "on the job". I'm sure you don't go in to the details of your sex life when you're in the office., you'd get fired. And if your coworkers found out you were cheating on your partner it wouldn't be hypocritical that you didn't talk about it at work all the time.

Since it looks like the wife beat out the windows in his Escalade with a golf club, it appears she was not necessarily in the loop about his sleeping with other women.

Other peoples infidelities are fun to watch for the most part. and anything regarding the sanctity of opposite sex marriage is entertaining to me as well, even if the two people are not homophobic twits, just the average straight wholesome loving sanctified in a way I can't be married.

Golf winnings are a drop in the bucket. Tiger makes most of his cash from endorsements. The big one is Nike, and they have entire product lines that exist solely because of their relationship, so I don't think it will change much, if at all.

Luckily for Tiger, his harem seems to be there voluntarily, so the scandal isn't all that scandalous. This is a stark contrast to Kobe Bryant, who lost out on a fortune after his rape case.

@18: First, even for Tiger $10,508,163 (just in 2009) is no drop in the bucket. But obviously without his golf winnings the sponsorships dry up. It's not as if he has any other talents or any personality.

Mahtli69 understands this. Tiger Woods is not a golfer, he's a corporation. There are hundreds of people working on Tiger business right this minute, all the time. He's just the CEO of Tiger Woods. And keeping that company healthy is his job. So yes, it does matter, if people who buy stuff (you and me) stop thinking of Tiger Woods the tournament winner and start thinking of Tiger Woods the midnight scrambler, with an angry wife brandishing a golf club and a different inflatable blonde in every clubhouse.

@1,

Because he doesn't want his wife to get any on the side? Elin Woods could have just about any man she wants. I doubt Tiger would be cool with that even as he has an inflatable blonde (thanks, Fnarf) in every port.

if you're a young MALE pro athlete/celebrity and you get married, there better be an "understanding" or you're just fucking dumb. you're going to fuck other women - the temptation is overwhelming - you're in your 20's, they are aggressive, willing and gorgeous, & you're on the other side of the planet from your wife.

tiger, arod, kobe, shawn kemp, etc. ad nauseum
