Libertarians opposed to new war plans for Afghanistan

Wes Benedict, Executive Director of the LP, said, "Rush Limbaugh should buy Obama a nice cigar. The liberal president has done exactly what the conservative leader wanted: escalate the war."

Just thought you should know.

Hey Will,

Does your beloved Obama believe in marriage equality? No. Libertarians do. Does he believe in ending the drug war? No. Libertarians do. Does he believe in non-interventionism and not bombing the shit out of a country that poses a minimal threat? No. Libertarians do. Does he believe in openness in government and transparency? No. Libertarians do. Does he believe in the entire bill of rights? Clearly not because of the violations of the 4th amendment which continue unabated. It's crap like this which drove people like me away from the liberal base, just like the "tea party" know nothings corrupted a small government, low tax ideology and turned it into a bunch of screaming morons who yell about "death panels", with no facts to back it up. It is in the best interest of the country to begin to look for actual compromise, not "bipartisan" bullshit to get things done. Just looking at the other side and scoffing is going to achieve nothing. And speaking of nothing, here's our blessed Obama and his political capital........

Fuck it, right? No one wants to fucking pay for it. No one wants to pay for anything.

@4: People with no power have the luxury of advocating lots of awesome positions. Just ask Ralph Nader. As I like to tell Greens: Make proportional representation your #1 priority and I'll take you seriously.

I agree with Libertarians about lots of things they believe in theory, but in practice they mostly seem to be against paying taxes or regulating business. The idea that a factory's freedom to not buy filters for their smokestacks trumps my freedom to breathe air seems to get conveniently glossed.

30,000 more troops is what should have been done YEARS ago, if little George and the Dickshow weren't so busy popping boners over being in Iraq. Afghanistan has always been the central front of a war for our security. You can't ignore it and not have a repeat of 9/11...or worse. It's about time it got the attention and focus of a president who doesn't have ADD and a tiny penis.

#4: Libertarians also believe people should die from any and all preventable causes if they don't have enough money. They believe in all of those "good" things because they are against almost all government - of course they are against the bad parts of the current government. I'll take tea partiers over libertarians any day - at least they don't want to get rid of Medicare, social security, the minimum wage, public schools, etc.

@6,

I'm not even a large L libertarian. I'm not even a libertarian, I, like you, agree with a bunch of their positions. The environment is one of the reasons I can't support a full platform by them. But ideas and sharing of ideas are key to moving forward. If you would like to see my ideal politician, look to my main man Russ at

An awful lot of so-called libertarians oppose reproductive rights. And then they wonder why so few women will join up with them.

@12 Go get em!

While I voted for Obama it is amazing to watch his supporters turn into apologists every time he fucks up. It will be fun watching them make up excuses for four more years of a war they opposed one year ago.

@6, that is the most succinct refutation of libertarianism I have yet encountered. I'm going to be using it a lot, and wouldn't object in principle to paying royalties (or buying you a big cigar), but since there's no law or anything...

And good comments by multiple others.

Proto-Anarchist fuckwads (Libertarians) are against government. Any government. So it's not surprise that they don't endorse military interventionism since they don't support the military.

The main problem with libertarian ideas is that they're stuck in the past. In a country where the population is mostly agrarian farmers who own only what they need to survive, then no big government is necessary. But when technology and industry advance beyond most people's ability to understand, then experts are needed to protect people from exploitation. The government, by it's very nature, should be the least biased source of experts and most protective of the citizens.

Of course, we have problems with government lobbyists and special interests, but the general idea is still valid.

Getting rid of government won't SOLVE the problem of corporations exploiting the populance, it will only HIDE it.

Big government is the solution, not the problem. The public's distrust of government is exactly what has allowed it to be taken over by private interests. If Americans weren't so paranoid, apathetic, and anti-taxation, they could have maintained control over the government and held their leaders accountable. It's the anti-government idiots who sabotaged the government. In short, libertarians simply want to make the problem worse, rather than fix it. Their goal is to kill what remains of a decent model of government, the very institution it took us centuries to build. If you want to fix the problems of America bring back citizenship, transparency and accountability. Gutting the government even more will turn this country into a third-world hell hole.

You people can shit on Obama all you want. At least he's not an ideologue or a conspiracy theorist. At least he wants to put the government to good use. At least he would like to see us not become a part of the developing world. Liberals shouldn't allow their ewimpy pacificsm soften their brains to the extent that they beging to see libertarians as fellow ttravelers.
