Emergency Nerdcasting System

Prepared for anything

So awesome: Gamers in New York might soon get emergency notifications through their consoles. It seems sensible, though getting folks to opt in might be a challenge. Will the state remotely shut down PlayStations and Wiis in order to get gamers to move to higher ground? Who will be the first cheater to fake an emergency message in order to get an edge? What game will build in an achievement earned by playing through fire warnings?

They're also using Second Life to train first responders, which seems like a decent enough idea. But then they went full-on kitchen sink and decided to monitor Facebook for suicidal signifiers, which seems like a bad idea from every angle. "You have received a message from New York State: Extremely worried about your recent use of the keywords 'sad,' 'lonely' and 'help' and would like to friend you. ACCEPT, DECLINE, REPLY, or END IT NOW."

The Stranger Testing Department is Rob Lightner and Paul Hughes.
