This Is One of Many Ways to Die

Posted by on Tue, Dec 1, 2009 at 8:13 AM

Times Online reports:

A former Miss Argentina has died after undergoing cosmetic surgery to get firmer buttocks.

Solange Magnano, 38, died of a pulmonary embolism after undergoing a gluteoplasty in Buenos Aires, a normally routine procedure which involves placing implants in the buttocks to give them a firmer outline.

The mother of eight-year-old twins, who won the beauty crown in 1994, died on Sunday after three days in a critical condition. Roberto Piazza, a close friend, claimed that the procedure also involved injections and the liquid "went to her lungs and brain".

"This woman who had everything is dead because she wanted to have a slightly firmer behind," said Mr Piazza, a fashion designer.

It's hard out here for a former beauty queen.

Not to be an ass, but I bet she's going to be the butt of a lot of jokes.

How sad for her children, family, and friends. How sad that she couldn't embrace the arse she had. Sure many of us wish we had a high, tight, and round bum, but hopefully aren't willing to obtain it surgically. I think I'll go do some more squats ...

Poor girl. Every time I think about getting work done, i think about the possible consequences of a routine procedure and decide to love myself as I am.

Yeah, there's nothing routine about elective surgery and definitely nothing routine about ass implants.

Elective surgery is a stupid way to play with your life. Talk about a slave to patriarchy.

Does Roberto Piazza understand the pathetic irony of a fashion designer making a comment about the exaggerated importance of body image? How many clothes has Piazza made that were expressly proportioned for stick-figure models?

She was Argentinian - she couldn't find someone to tango with?

This is horrifying on a number of levels. I've seen a recent picture, and the woman was absolutely stick-thin. Yet someone probably complained that she couldn't do lingerie or swimwear anymore because, at 38, there might have been a slight sag. Our standards of beauty are so screwed up.
