The Chain Versus the Little Guy

The Counter, an international gourmet burger chain out of Culver City, California, opened in Ballard not too long ago, going head-to-head with independently owned (and nationally renowned) Lunchbox Laboratory. They both make big, messy, hyper-indulgent burgers—so naturally you'd choose the local (and Gourmet magazine) favorite, right?

What you find out about each of them might surprise you. (Hint: The Butterball isn't always where you'd expect it.)

Also in this week's Chow section:

• Where to find delicious oysters on the half shell at cut-rate prices

• Chow Bio with former Top Chef contestant Robin Leventhal (she says, "It's been painful, quite frankly")

Il Bistro's happy hour (with the rhetorical question: When was the last time you heard of a ghost wearing a holiday sweater?)

• And tons of food/drinking events in the Chow Calendar (this weekend's the 2009 Winter Beer Festival!)
