Posted by on Tue, Dec 1, 2009 at 3:45 AM

The Seattle Times reports that the suspected cop killer has been shot:

Maurice Clemmons was shot and wounded in South Seattle and has been taken to Harborview Medical Center, according to a law enforcement source.

Clemmons was standing outside in the 4400 block of South Kenyon Street when he was confronted by officers. The source said he challenged the officers and was shot around 2:40 a.m.

He's dead, reports KIRO:

KIRO 7 has confirmed that Maurice Clemmons is dead. The suspected killer of four Lakewood police officers was shot in a confrontation with Seattle police on S. Kenyon St. in Rainier Valley around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Here's the 4400 block of S. Kenyon St, where Clemmons was shot:

UPDATE 4:36: Interim Seattle Police Chief John Diaz is expected to hold a press briefing in about 20 minutes.

my gawd, did the stranger just get the scoop before seattlecrime.com?
Huh.

SPD: win
Justice: draw
Clemmons: loss

*sigh*
5 people dead that didn't need to be. 9 children of police families left without their hero.
So sad.

"he challenged officers"

Uh huh. I was telling my co-worker yesterday, there is no way this guy is coming in alive. There was zero doubt in my mind that the officers would "see him reaching for a gun" or something and kill him.

That's not to say that I don't think this guy is a scumbag and we are better off without him in society, I just hope there is a outside investigation to see if the police acted as judge, jury and executioner.

Now, I may be wrong, the guy did kill 4 cops, I would venture that there is a fairly high likelihood that he did want to take out a few more cops and the officers did the right thing by opening fire on him but I hope the heinousness of his alleged crimes doesn't effect an investigation into the police conduct in his capture. We do live in a society where people are innocent until proven guilty and police officers don't get to decide guilt and execute the perpetrator on the spot.

Sorry to burst your bubble, John M, but officers absolutely get to decide guilt and execute the perpetrator on the spot when:

A) The perp is wanted for murdering four cops;

B) He's armed and dangerous; and

C) He refuses to obey a lawful order.

Good riddance to the scumball. And as I've stated before, my sympathy to the officers' friends, family and co-workers.

....never. Applying the language of execution to police work demeans the decision that this officer had to make.

whatevs, see you in hell fucker.

I wonder if the Stranger will acknowledge the good work done by the Seattle Time, considering that most of their reporting on this story came from that organization. Or will they immediately return to the incredulous hackery etc etc etc.

Seattle's only newspaper indeed.

@3, not in America; this was our live gladiator battle that was given play by play with all of our media sources.

Damn good entertainment for all!!

Oh and remember that we're sending another 30,000 to die in a meat grinder!

the inevitable outcome to this tragedy - clemmons had no plan to face justice. now the relatives get to suffer the shame and punishment the killer deserved. its the basic code of human society.

I hope this is over now. My condolences to the family of disease suspect and also to the officers families. It's a terrible, terrible tragedy.

I just hope that everyone who was there is not targeted, i'm concerned about innocent people that are being roughed up just because they're a relative of his, i was not very pleased with the way some of the relatives and innocent people have been treated , emotions are high but people are innocent until proven guilty, so caution needs to be heed.

i don't believe in the death penalty, but some cops obviously believe in a death penalty without trial.

Mother fucker!

If there was one person who should have had a long life it was this guy. Now he doesn't get to suffer for his crimes by spending decades rotting in a cell like he deserves, and every friend and relative of the people he's killed are denied the opportunity to look him in the eye and tell them what they think of him at his sentencing hearing.

Yes, good riddance, but he sure did get off easy!

@17 - Oh, I don't know. He'd been shot two days prior in the gut, certainly had peritonitis and was on the edge of septicemia. I imagine he suffered agonizing pain for those two days.

"deserved to be shot" @19? does anyone in the world REALLY deserve to be shot? that is a callous unsurprising statement.

@20: The world is a better place without this man in it. I don't know that there's much room for argument there. With the exception of a possible civil suit from his accomplices/family, I don't see a downside to this.

Don't worry about him not suffering in THIS life! I would imagine that right about now he is sizzlin' in a much-deserved HELLFIRE! Thank God he's dead!

God bless the families and fellow officers of the slain HEROES who protect us every day!
