Cancel Your Nook-y Christmas

Posted by on Tue, Dec 1, 2009 at 4:56 PM

Barnes and Noble has announced that their Nook e-book reader won't be available until January 11th. That clickety-clack noise you just heard is thousands of people giving up on B&N and buying a Kindle instead.

That's insane. I know a bunch of people who were waiting to try the Nook in a store before making a Christmas eReader request. This is a pretty amazing failure.

I just read the article -- it seems there's a slim chance preorders and in-store purchases might arrive before the holiday.

Just use your iPhone - it works, it's easier to read in bed, and it won't break the bank.

Last week, they announced they sold out. Is the 1/11 date for new Nook orders or pre-existing ones?

"that clickety-clack is the sound of thousands of people giving up on the B&N and buying a Kindle instead"

...and the tappity tap is the sound of many resumes being updated.

Nook stats are better then the Kindle stats and they are the same price. Why cancel my order for a lesser product for the same price. Lame. I can wait. Heck, took me longer to get my Wii.

I got my technology Christmas present already.

Clear (nee Clearwire) did their true Wimax upgrade over the holidays.

Got the new modem (free upgrade) and now I get 5Mbps solid, day or night.

Bought a 32" inch LCD Tv at BestBuy for $300 (minus $100 with a gift card I got from Chase rewards points).

Now I only order food in and never leave my apartment because of playing UnrealTournament and using Netflix WatchNow and Hulu all the time.

I may get a Wii fit so I can get out the doorway...

@7: Nook stats are DIFFERENT than Kindle stats... better is debatable. It's like saying PS3 stats are better than Xbox 360 stats -- both have arguable strengths and weaknesses, but cost, quality, and selection of titles seems to fall pretty squarely in the Xbox camp. It's similar in the Kindle/Nook battle. Right now Kindle offers more modern titles at a better price point, but Nook offers a number of free public domain titles. It's a trade off.

Didn't the same thing happen with the initial launch of the Kindle? I seem to remember that preorders sold out almost instantly, and there was a several month lag of the second production.

@9: Those "free public domain titles" are available to all readers (even my beloved, lowly, wireless-free Sony) not to mention that if you can rip a CD onto your (old-fashioned) iPod, you can get a Kindle book (at their nice price-point) onto a Sony. I'll argue for it every time (try getting a book from the library onto a Kindle without getting charged by Amazon) and highly recommend it for under $200.

@11: Thanks for the info. I was fence-sitting until the Nook came out, but the Sony info helps. Thank you!
