Mike Huckabee Primarily to Blame

Posted by on Mon, Nov 30, 2009 at 4:10 PM

Timothy Egan in the New York Times:

If this case does not sink the presidential aspirations of Huckabee, a leading Republican candidate, it should. By the standards that Republicans launched almost 20 years ago, Huckabee will be Willie Hortonized. But this case also shows, as with an earlier episode in Arkansas, that Huckabee’s judgment is seriously flawed.

If Huckabee were a liberal and a Democrat, he would be a punching bag for right wing blowhards an example of clueless, soft-on-crime politicians at their worst. Fox News would be stalking him, as they have others responsible for letting criminals out early.

Instead, he’s been allowed to get away with issuing a passive, blame-shifting statement. ...

Huckabee says this “horrible and tragic event” should not be politicized. But it is his party that has honed such attacks into a dark art.

He'll focus his attention on the liberals and the NYT, but he'll be swift boated by Mittens and Palin. Career is over.

I hate Huckabee, but this isn't his fault. Under normal circumstances we'd be complaining that a 17 year old black boy got an unfair sentence for robbery and should have had it commuted. Now because he's a suspect for cop killing suddenly that sentence was fair and he should still be in jail for it? Blame Pierce County for letting Clemmons out on the street, not Huckabee.

Maybe you'd be complaining, @2, but a lot of us wouldn't. The guy seems to have been incorrigible by age 18, so tough shit for him. A lot of "us" have got other things to worry about.

@ 6 - Huck is toast ONLY IF this is used against him. I actually think the other Republican candidates would be more likely to use it during the primaries than the Democratic candidate in the general election. Why the Democrats think it's dirty pool to point out the shrieking hypocrisy of the Republicans is completely beyond me.

While I'm sure he had his "best" christen intentions for letting the guy go back then (being saved by jesus and all that shit).

Still it's a major OPPS!!! that I hope stays with him for the remainder of his life and gets brought up during any future political campaigning.

The blame for this atrocity lies with the guy who allegedly walked into a coffee shop and murdered four police officers. I don't like Huckabee at all. But just because sleazy republicans would try to score political points by assigning fault doesn't mean that we should.
