The Story of Blond Hair

Posted by on Mon, Nov 30, 2009 at 11:59 AM

Thinking about blond hair and its short but brilliant history...

Picture_10.png
Long, long ago, humans in what is now Northern Europe had a diet dominated by a grain that did not provide enough vitamin D. This resulted in the spread of the blond hair mutation because very light skin and anything that improved the lightening of skin was favored for the production of the important vitamin. As to why blond hair is often associated with youth (and therefore with beauty), that is another matter for another time.

Europeans don't need another story about how they got their blonde hair, so fuck you all.

Blond hair doesn't produce Vitamin D. What in the world are you talking about?

Just more hating of the silver and blonde haired devils ....

Meanwhile, most of the "blondes" aren't really that.

A diet lacking in Vitamin D did not "cause" a mutation. Mutations are random. In this case, lighter skin and hair, which are more prone to allow Vitamin D synthesis due to sun exposure than dark skin and hair, provided a competitive advantage to those with lighter skin.

I think blond could be associated with youth due to the fact that for many people their hair gets darker as they get older. There are lots of people that were blondish as children, that have dark hair as an adult. Not really sure why that is though, maybe to allow for more vitamin D synthesis as a child?

Blond hair dates back about 11000 years or so. Certainly before the domestication of grain. What exactly do you think the people were eating?

Vitamin D is produced by the body when sunlight strikes the skin. If you wear clothes and it gets dark early, you don't produce enough.
