Everybody Hugs, Everybody Learns...

Posted by Dan Savage on Fri, Nov 27, 2009 at 9:10 AM

...and that's why I can't stand Glee. Really, people, Modern Family is the goddamn funniest show on television right now and all anyone can talk about is Glee, a show with a creative team that doesn't have the balls to let it be Election or the ability to finesse those wild swings between high camp and cheap sentimentality.

Modern Family is really good but I like Community a little better.

I'm on the fence about "Glee," and have been sitting on that fence since the show started. Too much cornball sentimentality mixed with too many garish characterizations, and those wild mood swings between saccharine and acid.

But if it makes you feel better Dan -- and it makes me feel better -- more people are actually WATCHING "Modern Family."

I love Glee. It's fun, it's cute, it's not perfect but I look forward to it every week.

Why are you suggesting I can't have both?

naw. 30 rock is the funniest, but modern family is the best of the new batch of comedies.

Modern Family is funny, but it's certainly not better than Glee. Are you even gay?

Can't we all just get along and love Glee and Modern Family and 30 Rock, since they are all awesome in their own ways? Yes. I think we can. Just one more step, and we're at full-blown world peace.

Glee got craven this week. Deaf choir mawkishness, romantic subplots all showing their wear, an asspopping urban girlchoir. Ew upon ew. Guester Eve is so beautiful, and fun to see my first sighting of a "sexting" on the tube, but a loss overall.

I haven't taken a chance on Modern Family. For some reason, Ed whatshisname is to teevee what Mandy Patinkin is to Broadway. Undeniably skilled, but somehow a black hole to me.

Yes! Modern Family hands down the best new show this season. Every character is lovable and Ed O'Neill shines.

I've been on the fence too: Glee is entertaining and the music is good, but the way it tokenizes and stereotypes most groups (women as scheming bitches, disabled people as deserving of our pity instead of equality, minorities apparently as a combination of fatties and bank robbers...) is really aggravating.

Finally saw the clip. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant need to get paid for this.

@7: "For some reason, Ed whatshisname is to teevee what Mandy Patinkin is to Broadway. Undeniably skilled, but somehow a black hole to me." This made me laugh harder than the Modern Family video clip.

If it helps you, Gloomy Gus, on Modern Family he never sits with his hands down his pants watching the TV and drinking a beer.

Modern Family is hysterical. I love how Lily (when she's included in the scenes) just looks at Mitchell and Cam so seriously wondering "how did this happen to me, who are these guys?" She's adorable. The only episode of Glee I've seen was the "Defying Gravity" sing off, which I loved and the wheelchair dance. The wheelchair dance would have had more of an impact if all the performers had actually been disabled people and not perfectly capable actors sitting in chairs they shouldn't have been allowed to use to entertain themselves with. If the show is striving for equality for all members of society, it fell short on the only episode I saw.

I don't know what's the matter with people that like Glee. FB is overflowing with (emotionally damaged) people that fawn over it and the show is fucking awful.

Its High School Musical with a dick in it's ass.

Of course, that Modern Family clip isn't any better. Rip off number 4 of "The Office" silly pseudo documentary style of comedy that is extremely tedious.

As far as ex-"Married" actors, I'm all about "Sons of Anarchy" right now: Katey Sagal's character's cleavage scar is the greatest thing on tv. And don't get me started about Hunnam. Argh, too late, masturbation imminent. Signing off.

I would think the kids from Glee were talented if each time they opened their mouth to sing I didn't hear a recording studio spill out.

Glee's inconsistencies are maddening (characters motivations change from week to week) but Jane Lynch hits it out of the ballpark every time she comes on screen.

30 Rock is a mess this year...it just hasn't been as funny as the first three seasons and the show has an air of desperation around it.

but, it's still not as disastrous as The Simpsons where the writing has descended to the level of a particularly bad Full House episode...

Forget those shows! Have you been catching The Middle?!? Patty Heaton is back, y'all!

The biggest problem with Glee is that it's never been quite as good as its first episode. And the way the relationships are working out, I don't see how they sustain it more than a season or two. And just how many songs do they need to rehearse for sectionals?

@ 14 - "Its High School Musical with a dick in it's ass."

Yeah, but that has a lot of entertainment potential right there.

The funniest thing of all is seeing all the SLOG hipsters - "I haven't owned a TV in 15 years!" - commenting about prime time network TV.

So I have never watched any "Modern Family" before that clip. Can someone explain to me how it's not a total rip off of "The Office?"

The dad acts like Michael Scott. Almost exactly. It's all over confident awkwardness from a guy who is really an idiot.

*yawn*

Surely someone will produce an edit of Glee soon that's composed solely of Jane Lynch's scenes. At that point I will become an avid fan.

I hate Glee. It feels really contrived. I can't watch the singing parts without cringing. I hope Lara reads this.

30 rock- most overrated, network friendly show ever. they've broken the 4th wall, and probably the 5th if it exists; being self aware doesnt equate wit or humor.

modern family and community; best new comedies of the year. best comedies on network tv. outstanding casts and writing.

glee-WHY DO YOU CAST OFF-BROADWAY ACTORS/SINGERS IF YOU ARE JUST GOING TO PITCH CORRECT THEM...fuck this show.

other nbc "comedies"- die already.

kelsey grammer- sucks to be you. second canceled show within first season post-frasier. super shitty. although "hank" deserved to be canceled. "back to you" on the other hand couldve been something.

go cable!- bored to death, curb your enthusiasm, eastbound and down; hbo can do no wrong...except entourage.

Modern Family's ratings have been very good. People are watching Dan. And why compare Glee and MF? They are apples to oranges. We can have both.
For those of you didn't see last week's MF, run, don't walk, to the nearest Hulu or Fancast and watch it. I was in stitches the wholetime. Goddamn funny stuff. Love Hisbo the badass clown.
