Sarah Palin's Untraditional Thanksgiving

Posted by Dan Savage on Thu, Nov 26, 2009 at 5:28 PM

Andrew Sullivan bait: Sarah Palin is spending Thanksgiving in Washington state—in the Tri-cities area—and took part in today's Red Cross Turkey Trot. KHQ News caught up with Palin this morning and asked her the kind of question Katie Couric would've if Couric weren't just a "gotcha" journalist interested in that "gotcha" journalism: what were the Palins havin' for Thanksgiving dinner?

Quiznos? Why does Sarah Palin hate America?

"It's too much work!" If a turkey dinner is too much work and being governor of Alaska is too much work, WHY are we even paying attention to her any more?

I'm in the tri as well. I can't stop thinking about Golob's post about wasilla, and how the tri has so many of the same qualities. It makes sense that she has roots here, and how nearly all of my progressive friends have moved away. Everyone here hates Obama and the government, yet they all in one way work for the government or get health care from the government. I want to come back to cascadia now!

When I moved to Seattle the typical T-G dinner for my punk friends was sitting on the corner in the cold at 11 pm at night and eating pork fried rice from a white and red carton.

Now everyone's all high and mighty.

You know what else is too much work? The 5K. Palin didn't finish the race.

"She didn't finish the race, opting to leave early to avoid more crowds, said Kennewick police Officer Michelle Pitts."

KNDU (Kennewick) is the affiliate who caught up with her...not KHQ (Spokane).

Today, I'm thankful Palin's not the VP of the USA.

She sorta reminds me of my oldest sister. Silly. Jokey. Kinda immature. I don't dislike her; she's fun to goof around with, but holy shit I wouldn't want her in charge of anything important.

Things seem to be going better for Sarah lately now that she doesn't have, you know, actual responsibilities.

I have no beef with Quizno's, but are there seriously no better sandwich shops in the Tri-Cities?

Quizno's is too fancy for the Palins. They'll be dining at Taco Bell.

Also, it might interest people to know that the "first dude" Todd isn't with the family. Apparently Sarah says he is back in Wasilla "fixing the roof".

@5 some people in the tri cities don't work for the government in tri-cities, like farmers. Of course you have to over look the fact that without massive public works projects like dams to provide water and power for irrigation nothing would grow in tri-cities except sagebrush and tumbleweeds.

By the way, funding for the McNary dam was initially passed by the FDR administration and it was built under the the Truman administration.

@17: I suspect many tri-cities farmers do indeed work for the government, unless they all refuse those sweet government subisidy checks.

It's really odd that people in Richland would be so receptive to her. When I was over there in 2008, before the election, there were about 9 Obama lawn signs to every McCain 1. Have things changed that much in a year?

@21 but those one in ten have no life besides their obsession with her.

I know that times have changed since my Bronze Age youth, but honestly - Quiznos is the best you can do on the familest of family holidays?

The remark was probably intended to appeal to the sort of slob who yesterday served up dinner on paper plates so he/she wouldn't have to clean up, and whose microwave and TV didn't cool down all day. It plays nicely into the "Sarah's a real person - just like us" meme that she wants so desperately to propagate.

The big question is do we have enough slobs in this country to make Mrs Palin a viable candidate? While the popular media tends to talk down to us, I really don't think we as a people are that loutish yet. Even in my oh-so-red hometown, where there's many a reactionary conservative, they would look down on a woman - especially a rich woman - herding her kids into Quiznos on Thanksgiving.

If Sarah Palin is seriously considering a run, she will need a competent handler who can walk the line between Rosanne and Margaret Thatcher she has chosen for herself.

@21: I don't know where the hell you were in tri-cities, but it's crazy conservative there and I didn't see ONE Obama sign when I was there. It's a hole.

@27, I was in Richland, which is arguably one of the more liberal (ish) areas of the Tri-Cities. It has a lot of physicists and engineers (read: educated people) in residence, due to it's proximity to the Hanford site. I agree with you fully about the rest of that area.

Talk about Hate. Why do you feel the need to post, dissect and put a negative spin on her every move?

I think Liberals are really scared of her potential. Discuss...

@29: I don't know if people fear Palin or not, but the negative hyperbole about Obama's every move pretty much matches the criticisms of Palin, in my opinion. Read the "Wilding of Sarah Palin" article at American Thinker, where a supposedly ex-liberal woman describes Palin in almost Christ-like terms. (Among other bizarre comments she claims that, as a mother and a fertile woman, Palin is as close to "the sacred" as a human being can get, and the Left instinctively hates her because she emanates Life and the Left is Darkness personified, and no, I'm not kidding.) Or, consider the comments of people who state without irony that Obama is the Anti-Christ. On the other side, there's Deepak Chopra's article about Palin, which almost made her sound like Damien from "The Omen". I guess what what I'm trying to say is quit being a crybaby whiner. Both sides are doing it, so get over it.

Thanksgiving is supposed to be work. My mom made a wonderful dinner for us, and I carved and then cleaned up afterwards. It was worth it to be together with my family, which is never work.

@ 30 Obama is President of the U.S.A. ; a job that comes with constant scrutiny. Palin is a political also ran. Big difference!

Free Lunch 33
@29 You know that now only 22% of people consider themselves Republicans, right? You know why? Because for most people, being associated with a party that has Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck steering the ship is just too embarrassing.

I'm praying for her to run, and I'm not even religious.

Debate question: "You don't seem to have much job dedication. You quit before completing a single term as Governor. How will we know you won't just resign the presidency when you get bored?"

Answer: "Because I love real Americans."

Please, bring her the fuck on!

@29.
I really am sorry, but I'm a liberal, and there is no way in hell I'm afraid of her. Or her, um, potential. Personally, she's just too stupid. Remember Africa spontaneously becoming a country? Or the Katie Couric interviews? The trying to get rid of certain books in the library? The no abortions even in case of rape? I'm really sorry, but, no, no fear. Chagrin, yes. Annoyance? Yes. Anger at her homophobia? Yes. Fear? Not unless she gets elected, though in that case, I'm pretty sure I'll just be pissed.
And really, your side does the exact same thing. So unless you can promise that you will get conservatives to end their version of the "post, dissect and put a negative spin on... every move" thing, zip it. You outlaw yourself from your own behavior.
We are all heathens to one another.
