Carl Kasell Leaving Newscasting

Posted by on Mon, Nov 23, 2009 at 12:26 PM

From npr.org:

Carl Kasell, who has been on the air with NPR since 1975 and has brought listeners the news of joyous events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and tragedies such as the 9/11 attacks in 2001, is planning to give his final newscast on Dec. 30.

Nooo! Don't go, Carl!

Um, hold on a second:

Carl, 75, will continue to serve as official judge and scorekeeper on NPR's Wait Wait ... Don't Tell Me!. "I'm just changing jobs," not disappearing, says Carl.

Now that I know he's not leaving Wait Wait… Don't Tell Me!, I am okay with it. That was the upsetting part. He cracks me up when he imitates the celebrities. Last Saturday it was Sarah Palin, ha! Listen to it here.

You mean it's not spelled Karl Castle?

Is he the one with the cleft palate or whatever?

OK, yeah... if he's staying with Wait Wait, that's cool.

I have his voice on my home answering machine (OK, cell phone voice mail) and everything! He's part and parcel of the show!

Yeah, this is spiffy; another almost decent journalist gone.

We really can only trust Jon Stewart and Bill Maher to bring us the news at this point.

I'll kill myself if Bill Moyers and Jim Leaher pass away.

one of my favorite NPR memories ever was listening to "Who killed Carl Kasell" . . . "I'd like to find a boyfriend and it's really quite a hassle, but what i'd like even more than that's to know who killed Carl Kasell."

I love Carl Kasell. I was heartbroken when Bob Edwards left but this is just devastating. I'll have to start listening to WWDTM again, even though it requires waking up earlier than I like to on Saturday mornings.

@6 If you have access to a computer ya don't. They podcast it every week. I listen to it on Mondays and I have to say it's a great way to start the week.

So glad to hear Carl's sticking with Wait..Wait. The limerick challenge just doesn't work without him.

Ugh. I'm sorry, but "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" is right up there with "Cartalk" and "A Prairie Home Companion": radio to be avoided at all costs.

#8, you just named the three best radio programs on the air.

A man who can make love to me with his voice alone is quite a man! We will miss you Carl!
