Viaduct Park?

Posted by on Fri, Nov 20, 2009 at 3:03 PM

Maybe this is really dumb question, but... would it be possible to save a piece of the Viaduct as a park/outdoor concert and performance venue? Kind of like the High Line in NYC? It could start at Seneca—walk out of the Seattle Art Museum and take a stroll to Pioneer Square? Or hear a concert at sunset?

I know, I know: earthquake, crumble, mass death. Plus giant vats of political poison from the Viaduct wars.

But Kadeena Lenz of WA DOT just gave me a ray of hope: "I'm not sure anyone's seriously thought about that as an option—with this project, nothing seems improbable."

She's got a meeting today with a project manager. She promised to bring it up.

Wow breaking news as always from you guys. the Seattle Transit Blog has brought this up several times in the past. You could at least link to it.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this idea! The views of the sound and mountains are awesome from the viaduct. Its the one thing I'll miss when it is gone.

At a minimum, they should post the area.

Something along the lines of "CAUTION: Earthquake, crumble, mass death."

Then when the big one hits in the middle of a concert, they can be all, like, "Hey, we put up signs, didn't we?"

Come to think of it, they should have those signs up already, shouldn't they?

I would totally go along with this if you would promise to jump off of it.

I love this idea so much. I've always loved the viaduct, and will hate to see it go, earthquake hazard or no.

Can they?

Sure, once they kill the Billionaires Tunnel and replace it with Surface Plus Transit.

Nobody knows about the "Seattle Transit Blog" so I don't think anybody has anything to apologize for.

Except for @1... for general douchebaggery.

It's a good idea. I've heard it before. But, it's good to hear it again. I hope they save some of the structure for an elevated park or something awesome.

@7: Maybe you should if you are going to toss out ideas without really exploring them first. Its like all you guys at the Stranger just read your own blog instead of other people's writings. Makes for a great source of news. Well, aggregate news anyhow.

@11: Your history indicates a concentrated lack of knowledge on most of the issue you comment on..perhaps a move back to DC would benefit all of us? It might also help to read the STB every once in awhile (which all your elected officers read) and the neighborhood blogs a bit more as they generally inform a lot more than this day-old, dead horse-of-a-blog does. THAT said, Will in Seattle is spot-on today in his brief analysis of the looming budget crisis.

Concert venue?! There is a reason most concert venues are not built as stacks of 40' wide concrete corridors.

ohh, we should build 100 story concert venues all over the city, with connecting high speed trains that run on moon juice, like they do in europe and japan.

It'd be nice to have some sort of outdoor music venue downtown again - I really miss those Concerts on the Pier.

I'd like to see a kind of Ultimate/Kickboxing elevated area where prisoners from the hardest maximum security institutions are airlifted onto a section that has been cut away so there are no entrances or exits.

A fight to the death will ensue, and the "winner" will get his freedom, the Northwest mate of his choosing, and a $10,000 credit towards a Vulcan condo.

@20: You need to sell that concept to Jack Donaghy.

The viaduct is the ugliest thing in Seattle. It should be torn down as soon as possible. None of it should remain.

"...I don't really read Seattle Transit's blog."

Brendan, it's not "Seattle Transit's blog," it's a blog about Seattle-area transit issues.

"Seattle Transit" was our local bus system that hasn't existed since the early 70s, when it became part of Metro Transit.

@22 The current viaduct is certainly ugly, but aesthetically, it isn't much worse than the condos lining Alaskan way just north of it, and given the viaduct offers lovely views to anyone traveling north or south, I think it wins a simple beauty contest.

Further, it's not like it has to be ugly, as the ivy covered portion or perhaps the Roman aqueducts illustrate.

Imagine a viaduct done like brick and green girders, which functions as the roof to Seattle's front porch, creating a dry space for a year round street fair, instead of a dark shadow over dirty parking lots.

The only other freeway running north-south between the sea and the lake has to choke its way through the Convention Center. The tunnel would be underwater in a liquefaction zone and the surface option simply reverses the polarity on the transportation magnet, pushing it away, including from the Port, but between the Sea and the lake, it can only go so far, before taking the people, cargo and jobs with it.
