Breaking: Police Officers Have Shut Off Several Blocks of Leary Way Between Ballard and Fremont

Posted by Christopher Frizzelle on Thu, Nov 19, 2009 at 8:18 PM

BallardStreetClosed.jpg

Dominic Holden reports at 7:39 pm by phone:

Dozens of police officers have shut down Leary Way between Ballard and Fremont and have surrounded a business that two witnesses say may be a "chop shop" where stolen cars are converted or modified so they are not identifiable. There are police on almost every intersection. It's impossible to tell where people are allowed to go and not allowed to go. It's just a tremendous amount of police. Someone on the scene says that they heard someone else say they heard shots fired 45 minutes ago.

Police have surrounded one of the buildings and are making announcements over the loudspeaker, saying, 'We know you are in there. Come out.'

One man appears to have already been arrested. There was just a loud bang—sounded like a gunshot.

This is just breaking and facts may change. Nothing on Seattle Times, Seattle PI, KOMO 4 News, King 5 News, or Seattlecrime.com yet. We'll continue to update.

UPDATE 7:43 PM: MyBallard.com has a photo of the scene. Their report:

We’re hearing of police activity around 8th & Leary and Leary is closed down west of 8th Ave. Witness say it is quite a display of police and SWAT in the area. Seattle Police Detective Jeff Kappel tells us that this is an ongoing investigation and police are serving a warrant. Given that this is an active investigation he says that he doesn’t have any other information.

Silver sent in this photo and says two people have been handcuffed and placed in the back of an unmarked vehicle. She says that officers are still yelling into a building for at least one more person to come out. She has also heard quite a bit of breaking glass and several “flash bangs.”

UPDATE 7:52 PM: Again from Dominic:

There is someone in the back of a cop car on the corner of Ninth NW and NW 45th, and officers keep coming up to talk to him, presumably to ask him questions. Over on 45th and Leary, that is the location of the person they are looking for. Police have said over the bullhorns, according to witness Kris Nyrop, "John Campbell, we know you are in there, come out with your hands up."

Police told Nyrop and a witness named Jordan (he wouldn't provide his last name) that John Campbell was suspected of running a "chop shop." Earlier they shot dowels in and "flash bangs," an officer confirmed, which was probably the sound we heard earlier.

Jordan, who is a nurse, said he gets home late and he has "seen them welding in there at 3:00 in the morning." He lives four blocks away from the site.

Nyrop said the place is "sketchy as hell" and he too has seen people welding in there at 3:00 in the morning.

Just a minute ago, it appears that a police van either drove in or drove up closer to the one-story building. The garage door had just been lifted up, suggesting that the officers and the SWAT team may have entered the building.

UPDATE 8:14 PM: Dominic Holden reports:

Seattle Police Captain Ron Wilson said that SWAT is out here serving a search warrant. "The case is under investigation and we cannot talk about it," he said. Wilson could not confirm any arrests, the nature of the suspected crime, or any tactics involved with the police operation. He did seem to imply that the police operation is not complete: "We have a warrant to serve and we are trying to do that," Wilson said. So it seems that whatever they've come to do they have not completed it yet.

Nothing yet at Seattle Times, Seattle PI, KOMO 4 News, King 5 News, KIRO TV, or Seattlecrime.com. Will add information as it becomes available.

UPDATE 9:41: MyBallard reports that police have arrested the suspect.

Constantine, Mcginn, Will in Seattle and other notables are just leaving a big event just east of there -- Jeanne Kohl-Welles annual post-election roundup at Hales brewery.

Wouldn't this have been a bad time to do this? Our mayor-elect, governor, and many more people are at hales ales right now, which is on Leary and 8th ave, as I understand it, for senator kohl-welles' event.

so thats why people become cops, so they can say 'We know you are in there. Come out.'.

@1,@2 - Either a case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing, or Greg Nickels and Tom Carr having a laugh. I'm guessing it's the former.

"Still nothing at the Seattle Times, Seattle PI, etc"

That's because this is a non story. Way to try to upsell, guys.

You know, I understand the urge to point out that the major local professional news outlets are missing this story. But the insistence on including your former, classier co-worker's startup crime blog on this list is astoundingly petty.

Seriously, Dominic, what happened to you that caused you to become the scattershot pissing machine that you are?

I went to Senator Kohl-Welles event and arrived around 6:30 PM. I thought added police activity was for the Governor who was speaking at the time.
Nobody at the event seemed aware or worried about what was happening outside.
I think Dow knew. Per usual he was Mr. Cool about it. Mayhem 2 blocks away aint no reason to turn the tapps off.

@ Lee

Dominic didn't write that. He was calling in. Christopher wrote the post. That's what those blocks of text mean.

I wish to retract my comments @7 in re Dominic, and redirect them to Christopher, as I realized that he was the person supplying the petty in this post.

Seriously, Chris, whatever your beef with Jonah, this kind of crap scores points for him and against you. I found it baffling that he was let go in the first place, but the ongoing need for some sort of score-settling at his expense . . .

Grow up?

Hey Lee, you're reading too much into it. I'm just trying to aggregate news from as many sites as I can think of, and listed everything I'd thought of so far.

Credulous fucking hacks ... how can anyone report a story like this without including comment from the chop shop side of the issue?

@10: Yeah, I could have done a better job of reading there. Oops. Anyway, I've attempted to correct my mistake.

who cares if you guys are the first to get a story broke? Half the time you get your facts wrong anyhow....not much to brag about. Leave the news (international especially) to other blogs, new outlets. Cover what you do best, your three block radius neighborhood blog.

I was fairly certain, given the amount of police presence, weaponry on display, and overall mayhem, that this was perhaps WTO 2.0 or the zombie apocolypse. I am really confused; these midnight welders can't be taken down by, say, 5 or 6 cops? I guess I'll put 'chop shop' up there with 'living next to a nuclear reactor' in terms of inherent public danger. Yikes. And I've also learned, thanks to this blog, that there is a lot of vitriol and hostility amongst the Seattle crime blogging community. I'm afraid of everyone, now.

Lee 21
@13: So, you seriously didn't realize that saying "seattlecrime.com hasn't posted anything about this" multiple times, in the same story, would sound like "yo! we scooped Jonah! w00t!!"?

What exactly am I reading too much in to?

Dog bites man: not news. Man bites dog: news. By the same token, when seattlecrime.com scoops the Stranger, it's noteworthy. When the Stranger scoops seattlecrime.com, it's not.

Myballard's got a link to new info from The Stranger's last real reporter at http://post.thestranger.com/seattle/&quo…;">Seattlecrime.com. But you guys still have your "we're the only ones with breathlessly reported coverage of a non-story" thing going. It appears that you are now behind the story.

So, the shut-in trolls who apparently have nothing better to do but breathlessly bounce from one neighborhood crime-watch blog to the next are getting their underoos in a bunch over who's reported what when?

I think this post is interesting. Thanks for the updated reporting. I live in Ballard, but I would have been interested no matter where it was..

This seems on par with other posts on the Slog that were done when a stand off or search occurred in a highly traveled zone and/or last a long time with very high police presence.

King Co. Jail's registry is showing that they booked one Norman [not John] Campbell at 9:23pm for possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of stolen property. Looks like that's your perp.

Me and my wife saw the SWAT procession on Western making their way up to Ballard. At the time we had no idea what the hell was going on. It might has well been a Striker unit from Fort Lewis. SWAT motherfuckers roll hard.

@4 for the win.

It was fun. The Governor got less applause than our Mayor-elect and KC Exec-elect did. But Pete Holmes got way more applause than all of them.

My guess is Tom Carr and Greg Nickels probably know they're unpopular and just plain didn't care what the Gov thinks.

The suspect here was Sean Campbell, not John Campbell. He was arrested on a warrant issued after he missed a court date in an ongoing case where he is accused of possessing of a stolen motor vehicle. That charge stems from an arrest last December for alleged involvement in a burglary ring detailed in this article http://www.seattlepi.com/local/395878_bu….
