Seattle Unemployment Still Rising

Posted by on Wed, Nov 18, 2009 at 10:06 AM

Via the Seattle Times:

The state's jobless rate edged up to a seasonally adjusted 9.3 percent in October, the Employment Security Department reported Tuesday. That's the same rate first reported for September, though after further analysis the September rate was revised down to 9.1 percent.

In the Seattle metro area, however, the unemployment rate jumped more than half a percentage point to 9.3 percent, bringing it in sync with the rest of the state for the first time since the downturn started.

Seasonally adjusted ...

Basically, this just means retail stores aren't hiring in record numbers like the last boom years.

Things are getting better - just look at ad revenues and other metrics which show things are repairing fairly well for a severe recession that Comrade Bush almost turned into a worldwide Greatest Depression.

This number only counts people who are receiving Unemployment compensation. What about everyone who has run out of unemployment? Or those that never had it? I'm guessing the massive homeless population in our country isn't counted either. Are we all unemployable and just don't count?

Someone in the media needs to at least estimate an accurate unemployment number if we're going to talk about it this much. Because really, who cares if 9.3% of people in Seattle are receiving unemployment compensation - if the real number of unemployed is more like 12-15%.

What was Mayor-elect McGinn's plan for helping to create living wage jobs in Seattle again?

This is brutal.
Unemployment in Mississippi is only 9.2%.
Must be that better educated workforce.
Fewer fatass union types.
Come on down!

whatever happened to the 'notes from the unemployment line' anyhow? as one who's been unemployed for almost a year, i've been missing those slog entries.
