Just Because Christopher Walken Is a National Treasure

Posted by Paul Constant on Wed, Nov 18, 2009 at 12:38 PM

I don't need a reason to post this, do I? I just happened across it again the other day, and I forgot how good Christopher Walken's census-taker skit on Saturday Night Live was:

It doesn't end very well (that's the Saturday Night Live curse), but Christopher Walken should have somehow gotten an Oscar for his five-minute performance in this skit.

If by "doesn't end very well" you mean the last five minutes. Yeesh!

Have you seen this, Paul? Christopher Walken performs Lady Gaga's "Poker Face."

paulus, i'm sorry to be the one to tell you this but you're just wrong. no, its not a matter of opinion. you're just ill-informed and tasteless. have a good day.

both the snl skit and the poker face vid are fantastic.

I'd go gay for Christopher Walken. He probably wouldn't go gay for me though.

I had no idea there was so much video of Walken on YouTube. That'll keep me out of trouble for a while.

Doesn't end well? Are you kidding? The end's the best part!

Also: Tim Meadows is left-handed.

To qualify for an Oscar, wouldn't he at least need to at least try to hide that he's reading off a teleprompter?

That was great. Strange proof that Walken would have done well in the Vaudeville era, also.

Just another clunky, under-baked SNL skit. Just cuz Walken is in it doesn't make it funny or good.

@6: I was struck by the number of videos on YouTube of "Asian guys doing impressions of Christopher Walken." Try it. You'll like it.

Looked on YouTube, but sadly no video of The Continental.

There's also the curse of constantly looking at the cue cards... at least he doesn't look back and forth a lot, so you can at least pretend he's just not making eye contact.

I'm sorry, as awesome as Walken usually is, this skit is an egregious example of the over-reliance on cue-card reading to which SNL has succumbed. The writing itself is gold, but the delivery suffers.
