Joe Newton's "Savage Love" Illustrations

Joe Newton has been doing charming, hilarious, creepy, and sometimes charmingly hilarious and creepy illustrations—or are they hilariously creepy and charming illustrations?—for "Savage Love" in the Stranger for years now. Joe recently created an online archive of all of his "Savage Love" illos, with links back to the original columns, which you can see here. Joe's tiny "Savage Love" illos are beautiful but readers who take the time to examine them closely will be rewarded: a Joe Newton illo almost always include a sly joke, a visual pun, or Joe's own subtle commentary about the people and problems that appear in "Savage Love." More of Joe's work can be found here.

Could you please not say "illo" any more? Because it grates.

He's an 'awful' artist, awfully weird, like after after the tipping point of too many Fig Newtons. Thanks typoh, dig her voice. Thanks Dan, dug a hole. Thanks to the Jews, dog a rap.

Sorry about that -- in my defense the "E" key and the "W" key are right next to each other on my keyboard.

Here's the article featuring my favorite drawing:

...and Dan's advice was classic too.

did joe do the illustration for "Lesbian Lobsters"? that was hands down the funniest illustration and one of the best columns, too.
