More on the Black China Girl, Lou Jing

Posted by on Tue, Nov 17, 2009 at 2:53 PM

This is Lou Jing..

Picture_8.png
She is making a lot of Chinese people upset because of her popularity and the color of her skin.

In many ways, Lou Jing is a typical young Shanghainese woman. Pretty and confident, she speaks Mandarin heavily accented with the lilting tones of the Shanghai dialect and browses the malls of this huge city for the latest fashions.

Born to a Chinese mother and an African-American father whom she has never met, the theater student rocketed into the public consciousness last month when she took part in an American Idol-esque TV show, “Go! Oriental Angel.”

The marketing gurus for the series could hardly have dreamed of a better promotional gimmick... Here was a tale guaranteed to attract eyeballs—a girl of mixed race brought up by a single Chinese mother struggling to gain acceptance in a deeply conservative, some would say rascist, society.

If Lou Jing is the product of a black American and Chinese woman, I can understand why a number of Chinese people are freaking out. Just look at her...
Picture_10.png
There is very little about her that is Chinese in appearance. In this particular mixing of genes, the black father totally dominated the Chinese mother. All of her genes surrendered to the potency of her lover's blackness ("I can bust you out with my super sperm"). Is Lou Jing an exception? Or is she the standard for all encounters between blacks and Chinese? This near-total swamping? Those conservative Chinese have to worry about the world they have found themselves in—one that is racially and culturally globalizing. It's fear of a black planet, all over again.

.... SOME would say.... please. Asians, and Chinese in particular, are some of the most intensely racist people on the planet. Hopefully her presence on the pop-culture scene helps them progress a bit.

Just cause I'm in that kind of mood:

Shocking.

Wow... she is gorgeous. The Chinese would be foolish not to embrace her with open arms. I sure would!

I'd say it's more related to the Han myth that they're all descended from the Yellow Emperor, who has subsequently been deified. Koreans and Japanese have the same type of myth and the same problem. If you're descended from gods, then any mixing with non-divine peoples has to be seen as blasphemy.

It's among the many reasons I'm happy that we're a mongrel nation.

She is gorgeous. Sadly this sort of fear of a prevailing blackness or brown-skinned world is not solely a thing of China but it also rears it's ugly head in Europe, Latin America and here. And what better proof than how our own President is viewed and feared by some segments in our society.

@8 - I was just about to mock the same line.

How poetically phrased, Charles.

@6 - Yep. I have the feeling it may be related to the "genetically dissimilar" line of thought. Or maybe just: "hey, that's a new look!"

She does look "blacker" than a lot of Afro/asian people.

Chinese people are crazy racist in their own way. It is very different from American racism, what with the real lack of non-Asian people in China. They've got attitudes about different minority groups that most Americans would not notice, plus there are lots of old cultural myths about foreigners (white and black) being sex maniacs who are out to steal all the Chinese women. Of course, our porn industry does not help with the conception at all.

Kinda looks like a painted up version of a couple hundred Black-Vietnamese hookers that popped up in LA during the mid 90's.

Still, I'd rather see this kind of mixed race result than the butt-ugliness that is being produced in NYC's melting pot. Ugh.

Umn... what do you mean she doesn't look Chinese? Look at the shape of her face. Don't you see her cheekbones?

She's very Chinese in the shape of her face, and general construction. She's darker in color, of course, and her hair texture seems closer to black than not, but really now, it's mostly a color shift, not a structural change.

*shudder* Why do you make everything sound so creepy and gross, Charles?

Why is it that every time Charles Mudede touches a keyboard, something gets "totally dominated?"

china has a large influx of african immigrants, and though its racism is not as bad as korea, china is super racist towards blacks and chinese of mix black ancestry, but they do embrace the whites and the chinese and white mix.

some people might tempted to say that its just as racist here, but it doesnt even compare. people are attacked, yelled at on buses, slapped if theyre holding the hand of a black or dark skinned foreigner. fugget about it. the kind of racism they have is comparable to the jim crow type that we use to have here in the south. it would suck to be of african ancestry in asia. except for the phillipines, where they keep it real.

Yes, hybrid vigor indeed... she's super beautiful!

As to chinese racism: One myth I've heard to support their racist superiority is that when 'god' made people he threw them onto different corners of the Earth. Whites weren't thrown close enough to the sun, and are (essentially) undercooked. Blacks were thrown too closely, and are burnt, but the Chinese were thrown to the exact spot, and are properly toasted.

It's as useful a racist myth as any, and kinda humorous I think!

I love how the predominantly white Slog population enjoy piling on their me-toos whenever there are Asians worth criticizing. It feels good to think you're superior because you're so enlightened, right? You've all obviously achieved Stephen Colbert levels of race blindness that you'd never paint literally a billion people with a broad brush based on stories you heard your disillusioned friends with yellow-fever tell you while bitching about how they weren't immediately bedded by all the poontang they expected during their eastern conquests. I'm simply hallucinating and posts like 1, 4, 14 don't actually exist. Lalala

Charles, the phrase is "taking the piss", as in "taking the piss [out of something]" i.e. to take down a peg.

"taking a piss on" is, even in the UK, mere micturition.

The citizens of Japan I know are racist not because of a desire to protect genetic purity but out of fear of violent crime. Despite statistical proof that immigrants in Japan commit fewer crimes per person than your average Japanese national, it's the exception that proves the rule: whenever a black serviceman stationed there rapes or murders a Japanese citizen (and it happens), his is the media-borne face of crime for months and months.

Actually, my sense of superiority comes from being smarter, stronger, faster, and better at quickly solving problems than most people I have ever met.

Charles: I think that you would get less flak if you had not been such a dick to those penguins.

I guess Charles is a bit sheltered because she looks like a lot of Chinese Jamaicans that I've known. the potency comment is just well, stupid. And its not like she is the only black Chinese person on the entire mainland. And given what are known about the genes and the constructs of race, you could have said that perhaps the Chinese mom had more african ancestry in her genes that previously known - I'm goin to have to search for your post on the Skin movie (Afrikans parents have black daughter, who goes through various race classifications throughout her life even though she is a product of her parents' genes)

I could not disagree more. I'm Japanese from Japan - Honshu, and she has a totally East Asian Face (and body like her mother's). Her beautiful skin coloring and curly hair are what set her apart physically, but she 100% fits the asian archetype for facial and physcial beauty. Culturally she is totally Chinese, having lived in China and traveled extensively.

I'm not suggesting she is beautiful because she doesn't look black. I'm suggesting the combination of color, culture, poise, E.Asian humiliity, and innocence are what give her uniqueness. She is incredibly gorgeous by any standard. Amazing she hasn't been nabbed by a modeling agency.
