What's for Lunch? Po Dog Is Finally Open

Posted by on Mon, Nov 16, 2009 at 9:13 AM

Po Dog, Seattle's first upscale hot-doggery, is open (after predictable delays) right by private goth club the Mercury on East Union on Capitol Hill. They're making dogs with with cheese sauce and crushed potato chips ($6.05); bacon, scrambled egg, and cheddar ($6.85); guacamole and salsa ($6.95); and wrapped in bacon and deep-fried (the Danger Dog, $6.75). Also, veggie dogs and beer.

Pretty slick for a wiener place.

"Danger Dogs" sold on Mission Street in SF for $3. I guess the "Po" in Po Dog is ironic.

My brain flipped the order and added an extra "o". Not good.

looking forward to checking this place out, but the website design is less than ideal; i miss the days when webmasters routinely offered a text only, "non-flash" (that is, "non-sucky") version of their sites.

How much for a dog without the wallpaper?

What an ugly restaurant.

But at least they have veggie dogs.

This is a dumb idea, but the trendies will likely flock to it, leading to additional locations in Ballard and West Seattle, and some imitators in those neighborhoods and Fremont too.

I remember visiting a friend in Birmingham, Alabama in the early 90s and doing a double take on hot dog restaurants that were sit-down places. In Denver you can buy hot dogs only from sidewalk carts and at 7-Elevens. Just another reason why we have the lowest obesity rate in the country.

Seven bucks for a goddamn hot dog? FUCK YOU!

All of these fatty, comfort food joints seem like a referendum on all the organic/vegan places of yesteryear. Could we find some middle ground, please?

The important question here is this: do they have cream cheese?

@9: Yes.

The prices seem reasonable so long as the quality is good. A buck for a hot dog at 7-11 may seem cheap, but you'll pay for it later...

By upscale do they mean the "meat" and "filler" used is the highest quality cow and pig shit and only the finest in rat droppings?

I find the phrase "our latest renderings" a bit questionable for a hot-dog joint.

Even if it's made with Kobe beef I'm not paying $6.95 for a hot dog.

At Costco you get a quality, all-beef hot dog or Polish (and a drink) for $1.50. And no, you don't have to be a member.

Can I get a sandwich with one of those trembly little rat dogs in it, like they show in the ads?
Seriously, though. Is their debit card hookup on yet?

Am I the only person who thinks that the hot dog is a food best served to you when you're surrounded by concrete (street corner/sports event) and your insides are drenched in alcohol (street corner/sports event)?

WHAT- 5 BUCKS FOR A BOCKWURST AT THE FRANKFURTER ISNT "UPSCALE", BUT 6 BUCKS HERE IS?

OLD CATZ HAVE BEEN EATING GOOD DOGZ SINCE BEFORE BJC WAS GLEAM IN EYE.

THOSE WHO KNOW NOTHING OF DOGGIE HISTORY ARE DOOMED TO REPEAT IT, ONLY WITH HOT TOPIX STYLE GRAPHICS...

Doesn't Cyber Dogs count as at least marginally upscale, at least for their crazy offerings if not for their well-worn decor?

They have amazingly delish local vegan Field Roast dogs (that you can use in any menu offering), not just any crappy veggie dogs.

It's pretty ridiculous that they even offer pork-byproduct/global-warming/swine-flu dogs still.

I suppose, if one presumes these $7.00 hot dogs are going to constitute a complete meal then that's probably not too outrageous a price. But of course, one must also factor in the 9.5% sales tax, plus you're probably going to feel obligated to leave a tip of anywhere from $1 - $2 per dog, and suddenly that $7.00 hot dog is going to end up costing closer to $10. Throw in a drink (probably one of those $2 cane-sugared retro boutique sodas) and your bill is going to run nearly $15 in some instances.

And that does seem a bit excessive for a hot dog, no matter what kind of organic, grass-fed, free-range organs and offal it's made from.

In all seriousness I find this trend toward upscaling traditionally cheap proletarian street food into expensive designer gourmet sit-down fare somewhat disturbing, not to mention ultimately futile. Even with the rampant uninhibited gentrification occurring on the Hill, are there really going to be enough Microsoft condoids in the neighborhood to support a place like this? Or will they end up going the route Pike St. Fish Fry took when it quickly discovered charging $8 for three pieces of fish and a deep-fried lemon wedge, THEN charging an additional $4 to get the "chips" and ending up spending $12 just to get fish AND chips wasn't exactly a sustainable business model?

What the hell is up with Seattle's fetish for turning traditionally inexpensive foods and dining experiences into pretentious, overpriced nonsense like this? First we get street food that's more expensive than a decent sit-down restaurant meal, now we get fucking $7.00 hot dogs? Ridiculous.

The image looks pretty slick because it's a computer rendering and not what the place actually looks like.

right on brother COMTE:

Here here brother! I think the best thing we can do to improve this neighborhood and our town is not frequent these types of estabilshments--frankly they are a joke and are really pulling one over on us. Let the goths eat the expensive dogs,.. and BJC, really how much to tip here? How about a quarter a dog, after all there's more work going into a latte than this extremely unhealthy food. Stop going to these places people...it took Oddfellows almost 6 months to get their shit together, a little dump with horribly unhealthy food like this will fold and something else will open in its place--the only benefit.

@23:

Is it really a computer rendering, or is it just that the place LOOKS like it was rendered in some sort of CAD program to begin with?

In a neighborhood where you can get excellent tongue tacos for less than $3, what is the fucking point of a place like this?

Ate one there last Saturday. The bun and trimmings were very good. The dog was pathetic. I asked where the dogs were from as was told "Sysco". So, basically institutional food service quality hot dog, sold for a premium.

I'd go back gladly if they upgraded the hot dogs themselves. As it is, the "meat" just lets down the whole concept.

Wow, Sysco huh. I wouldn't by any stretch of the imagination call that a "gourmet hot dog", like they do on their web site.

Beyond being overpriced for a mediocre hot dog, the interior was horrible - they tried to hard, they clearly should have hired a professional. or, if they did they should have hired one that wasn't blind. 10 minutes with a architect or interior designer could have resolved a lot of the obvious issues.

Also, from what I read the whole thing was started by a former corporate recruiter? way to capitalize on the hipsters.

Seriously, what is wrong with you people? Do you really have to use the "F" word in every other sentence? Are you really that outraged? I have never been to this restaurant and do not live nearby, not even in the same state (thankfully, since it seems as though the people living nearby must be terribly rude and have nothing better to do than slam this restaurant on a public forum); I feel bad for the owner of this restaurant as she has to read your nasty posts, but believe me, I feel much worse for all of you who slam her as you obviously have nothing better to do. Once again, what is wrong with you people?..get a life!
