The Morning News: Delay on Climate Change Agreement, Lies in Sarah Palin's Book, and Guns

Posted by Garrett McCulloch on Sun, Nov 15, 2009 at 8:34 AM

Don't Worry Guys, There's Plenty of Time: World leaders give up on a binding climate change agreement for this year's climate conference in Copenhagen. One of the biggest obstacles? The U.S. Congress couldn't get strong enough legislation on greenhouse gases passed.

$1 Million: That's the bail set for the Greenwood arson suspect. Charges will be considered Tuesday.

Sarah Palin's Stupid Book: Short on truth. In fact, pretty much all of it is total bullshit (and that's what John McCain's people say).

For When Miniature Golf Isn't Crazy Enough: Could this be the awesomest thing ever to happen to anything golf-related?

Afghanistan: Can the U.S. budget support more troops there?

Better Be Nice To China, Obama: 'Cause we owe them money. A lot of it.

The Fed: Partly to blame for America's financial mess, but perhaps partly responsible for pulling us out of it.

Firearms: Guy walks into community center with gun, gets kicked out of said community center, all so he could sue the city for its parks gun ban.

Yesterday in the Sports: UW and WSU football were on the receiving end of routine ass-kickings, 6,000 more seats on sale for MLS Cup at Qwest Field.

Dan Savage is quoted in yesterday's NYT piece about Ellen and Portia: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/15/weekin…

When is Ellen gonna have you on, Dan?

Landslide Democratic President and SuperMajority Democratic Congress with their thumbs stuck up their asses.
Turns out all the BITCHIN during Bush's term was pure BS- the Democrats have done NUTHIN.

We probably do have enough time to sit around with our thumbs up our asses for a few years before getting to work on Climate Change. That's not to say that we should, but we probably have the time anyway.

Of course, I would prefer that we let things get as bad as they can possibly get within the recovery time, before we do anything about it, just so we empirically prove that we were right, and I can go around shitting in all the Conservatives' mouths for claiming it's "the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American People".

Oh, do we? The opposite is true, Christampa; it's too late for action. Humanity could cease all activity tomorrow and the oceans would continue to die. 450-pound jellyfish off the coast of Japan, once an almost mythological rarity, seen once every forty years, are now an annual occurrence, noteworthy because they KILL ALL THE FISH. There will be no fish anywhere in the world's oceans in twenty years.

Yeah, no rush.

We have to be impressed by Washington's college football teams' consistent World Class SUCKING.

Year after year you girls manage to be the Undisputed Absolute WORST in what is already a pretty mediocre conference.

Forget R71-
your manly football teams are indisputable proof to the nation that you are the leaders in Punk Assed FAGGOTRY.

re:China

Change!
Moral Leadership in the World!!

"Every president since George H. W. Bush in 1991 has met the Dalai Lama when he visited Washington, usually in private encounters at the White House, although in 2007 George W. Bush became the first president to welcome him PUBLICLY, bestowing the Congressional Gold Medal on him at the Capitol.

...however...

"In June, the White House told the Dalai Lama that while Mr. Obama would meet him at some point, he would not do so in October, when the Tibetan spiritual leader visited Washington, because it was too close to Mr. Obama’s visit to China.
"White House officials have been working for months to make sure that Mr. Obama’s three-day visit to Shanghai and Beijing conveys a conciliatory image."

W didn't sneak around meeting the DL in private-
he told the Chinese they could Fuck themselves if they didn't like it...
Obama on the other hand is bowing and genuflecting to our new OverLords.

Fnarf, I know the oceans are in godawful shape, and I know that it's only going to get worse, but I still have faith that the Earth has fabulous self-correcting powers that will even that out over the long run. As interrelated as Climate Change and the Ocean are, they're still somewhat separable issues, and the former is still fixable after a fashion. If we can recover from one, we should eventually recover from the other.

This line of thinking is necessary. If we truly are fucked, we certainly can't allow ourselves to think that we're fucked. "The young do not know enough to be prudent, and therefore they attempt the impossible -- and achieve it, generation after generation." In this, I'll have to ask you to leave your curmudgeonly wisdom at the door.

@8, I think it's the other way around -- we could still make some changes that would ameliorate climate change, but the oceans are FUCKED even if we do. Seriously, fish is almost gone already -- the Japanese super-trollers now routinely have to go to Antarctic waters to get catches.

I repeat: in 20 years, NO MORE FISH.

To paraphrase George Carlin, it's not the planet we have to worry about. The planet isn't going anywhere. It's us -- humans -- that are fucked.

According to (admittedly unreliable) sources The Stranger donated extensive in-kind resources to candidates and causes it supported in the election earlier this month-

>"Approve R-71" signs on newspaper boxes
>"Approve R-71" running at the top of the print edition for weeks
>"Approve R-71" banners running on the website for weeks (a website with Zillions of unique visitors a month, most in Washington state)
>Banners and advertisements for candidates for office running on the website for weeks.
>News "reporters" doing exhaustive extensive infomercial advertising masquerading as journalism to promote candidates and causes endorsed by The Stranger.

Did the Stranger report the value of these extensive in-kind contributions to state elections officials?
What was the value of the donated services, time and expertise?

The oceans won't be fishless and you know it Fnarf. Even if 99.9% of the fish population dies --a distinct possibility-- there will be stragglers and hanger-ons(Hangers-on?) in certain sections of the Ocean. And those seeds can repopulate even a markedly different ocean within a few hundred years. Even humans bottle-necked a few times in our history, and we came out little worse for wear. Things are going to suck big time for a long time regardless, but if we were at the point where the oceans were done for forever, even Glenn Beck wouldn't be able to spit at the evidence.

So why is there no mention of the big news story about the cyclist who plowed a child over in front of Pike Place Market, and then tried escaping only to be tackled by witnesses down the block?

Hmmm?

Is the Stranger fair and balanced enough to cover a story about a cyclist that is going to face multiple assault and battery chargers for causing a child's mouth to be wired shut to fix the damage?

Story please!

BTW, RC, you ought to provide the link yourself. For such a "big story," it's not on the home pages of the Seattle Times, Seattle PI, KING, or KOMO, nor is it anywhere on their local news pages.

@30 Hey Matty

You are correct. It isn't any of your business, and provides no relevency to any of the discussion on this site. Nice try but I won't take the bait. You can whine/cry/scream all you want but it won't happen. Having a modicum of privacy and anonymity far outweighs any benefit from having to "prove" myself to you ;)

Ohh and btw Matty here's your sign:

and just in case this jalopy of a site can't handle url wrapping..

If it's not any of my business, why did you bring it up? Surely you weren't lying to gain some sort of cred...

As far as the bike story goes, mea culpa (I was searching for Bike and bicycle, not cyclist), but it still wasn't on the main or local pages of four major Seattle news outlets, so that makes your claim that it's a "big story" false.

@33 You really aren't that bright are you/ You sometimes have an occasional thought provoking quip, but overall, not so much... sorry to break it to you..

You seem to be the one continually bringing it up. I mentioned it once in passing, as it was relevent to the story at the time. I need no "cred" concerning law or law enforcement, however it does provided a bit of background insight into the validity of my base of knowledge on certain subjects.

It would seem that someone doth protest too much, as they feel inadequate or spurned by a revelation I made. Perhaps you should look inward at these feeling of insecurity you possess? A bit of self reflection might well do you some good Matty.... sadly I won't be here as frequently as in the past... the demands of the job will keep me from trading jabs with you and others.. truly a sad thought for SLOG...

LOL! No, I just have a good bullshit detector. And I brought it up "twice," so once again I've caught you in an exaggeration. I think you're projecting when you speak of inadequacy, perhaps because someone's zinger that you're LEO experience consisted of being mall security was actually close to the mark.

Whatever... I won't bring it up again if you won't, but just know that I don't believe you were or are an actual policeman, sheriff's deputy, highway patrolman, special agent, or any other sort of real cop. You have any opportunity you choose to prove otherwise.

2008 saw what NASA called the Sun’s “blankest year” where 266 of the year's 366 days, there were no sunspots. Sunspot counts for 2009 have been very low, too. This all begs the question: does solar activity have a long-term effect here on Earth? Times of depressed solar activity correspond with times of global cold. From 1645 to 1715, few if any sunspots were seen and Western Europe entered a virtual deep-freeze known as the Little Ice Age. Times of increased solar activity have corresponded with global warming. The 12th and 13th centuries, when the Sun was active, European climate was quite mild. Experts predict that the current solar cycle will peak in 2013 with a below-average number of sunspots. The Sun should remain calm for at least another year. Of course, all this disruption is caused by the lighter-than-air carbon dioxide America has produced in the past few decades. These light gases rise to the sun and disrupt the magnetic causes for sunspots, altering the averages of sunspot activity. The effects on the under developed world is extreme, causing wars, famines and revolutions which disturb the compassionate dictatorships and the order they provide. It must stop! America must be shut down by the Obama Administration, beginning with elimination of the middle class and all its outrageous demands for goods and services.
