The Woman Whose Face Got Torn Off By That Chimp?

Posted by on Thu, Nov 12, 2009 at 8:09 AM

Remember her? She went on Oprah and there's a story about her interview with Oprah here. There's a link at the story that you can click on to see her chimp-ravaged face. I can't bring myself to click through. Can you?

Oil of Olay won't be helping that out anytime soon.

oh god. I saw this yesterday- you know how trees will sometimes get those bulbous growths from parasites? It looks like she's got one of those covering her face. So, so sad.

It isn't as bad as you'd think. Her nose is ENORMOUS and she has something kind of gross going on with her left eyelid, but I've seen worse.

It's interesting. She actually has no face. I guess this is the problem with having an animal that shares 98% of our DNA and is five times as strong. When a chimp fucks you up, it does so with a high degree of calculation (I recall an incident a while back when a chimp attacked a guy and ripped off his junk).

Nice, Cato.

I think this was a worthwhile story because Oprah interviewed her at the hospital and not in-studio. During the in-studio part, she explained that Charla's injuries were horrific but once you starting talking to her, you focused on her words not her injuries.

It is horrible (I've seen burn victims that weren't that bad). That said, I think she could have some plastic surgery on a couple of place and wear sunglasses and she would be okay.

I do think it sad that her friend who called her for help didn't just call 911. The friend knew her chimp was out of control and I have no idea what she thought just one person could do. The 911 calls she made once the attack was on were terrible. Wild animals should not be pets.

I saw this yesterday. I feel bad for her. I agree with, Westello, it was easy to focus on her words not the injuries.

Is the photo much worse than the awlful "Bodies: The Exhibition" ad in the margin of slog?

This reminds me of someone looking at the smoking rubble of a burned-out house and going, "Eh. Just needs a little spackle."

On a similar note, a photo essay on the dark, radioactive legacy of nuclear testing on Kazakhs who became unwittingly deformed test subjects along with their children and grandchildren:

It's similarly horrifying that she lost both of her eyeballs. Even if she becomes a candidate for face transplant (and the life-shortening drug regimen that implies), she won't have eyes. It's sort of impossible to imagine anything that would remotely compensate her for the sudden loss of most of the best body parts. Chimps are assholes and the other lady should be whipping herself daily with shame.

Note to self: if any of my friends acquire a chimpanzee as a "pet," they're no longer my friend.

Unfortunately, yes. I can and I did. Is that the best that the plastic surgeons could do?!

Chimps are scary as shit. Like a super strong high strung human with no control over its emotions. fuck that. I'll take a bear any day of the week.

@13...oh god, she lost her eyeballs? I never heard that. Not that it wasn't horrific before, but I may go hurl now. I'm glad I didn't click.

Actually, on second thought, if you have to live after having your face ripped off, I guess I'd rather not have eyesight so I wouldn't have to look at the results.

She's missing almost everything on her face. No jaws, I think. Her mouth is purely surgical. You can see where her left eyeball would be but the right side is just too puffed up. Not much of a nose to speak of. She has no hands except for the one thumb they could re-attach.

Also, the 911 calls? Horrifying. 'He's eating her' is something you never want to hear in reality.

Her face looks terrible true, but my first reaction upon seeing it was "The doctors did a hack job. There was no attempt at reconstructive surgery."

They did not fully inform her of the loss of her eyes and she found out when it was mentioned to her in passing. That was bad.

I hope she can get a good plastic surgeon who can do a better job to repair the damage. She deserves it.

Yah, just stick some big sunglasses on her, and maybe a hat, and she'll blend right in! WHAT?! I guess what disturbed me the most was that there was a Hello Kitty ad right next to the photo of her. That was a very weird juxtaposition.

Ever watch Chimp Eden? Watch it and you'll see why a human should never even be on the same side of the cage as a chimp. They are horrible creatures and look like they could be ready to go bonkers at any time. Maye not so much the females, although they are gross with those horrible red, bulbous, ugly butts, but the males. I'm saying this with anger and pain because of the horrific attack on that poor woman. Why didn't they just let her die? What is wrong with those paramedics? Do you think she would really have wanted to live if she saw herself? This incident changed my perspective on chimps 180 degrees. God please help that poor woman and surround her with many, many people who love her.
I agree! Why couldn't the surgeons at least attempt to make something out of her face. What a hack job and why in God's name does she have the huge thing hanging off her face? What is it???
