Edward Lighthart Forgets Seattle

Posted by Charles Mudede on Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 8:12 AM

Seattle Times reports:

Edward Lighthart, who walked out of Discovery Park in July with apparent amnesia, has reappeared in Las Vegas, N.M., again with no apparent memory of who he is.

Dr. Merritt Ayad said Lighthart was found by local police wandering the streets, carrying a passport and old European identification.

Ayad said the man didn't know his identity but warmed to the name Lighthart. "He's distressed he can't remember," Ayad said, adding that Lighthart appeared healthy.

After all this city did for Lighthart, he not only forgets us completely (our parks, our hospitals, our excellent social workers) but takes his one-man show to Las Vegas, NM. If only he showed up in Las Vegas, NV—that city, the quintessential postmodern city, is the ideal place for a person who can't remember a thing.

The cynicism in this is so thinly veiled, it's rather offensive. You really think he 'forgot Seattle' on purpose? What a dick thing to say.

Las Vegas, NEW MEXICO is "the quintessential postmodern city"? Seems like a bit of a stretch. Maybe it's just another example of snarkiness and big words being more important than reading the source article.

You've unearthed, I believe accidentally, an elusive point about the usage of 'post-modernity.' It's a meta-irony that this Las Vegas is in NM. I usually don't go for theory jargon, but I want to believe that such a post-postmodern exists, where the sublime eclipses kitsch or urban audacity, the way I see this circumstance.

"What's next Charles, black folks?"

Charles doesn't need to make fun of black folk, that's what we have "The First 48" for on A&E.

I think he is a phony too. Something didn't ring quite right in the beginning and I feel even more bells going off now. This guys reminds me of people who do things to get attention by pretending to be ill or making their children ill.

I apologize if I am wrong.

This smells as genuine as balloon boy. Is this guy secretly filming a reality show? Does Joaquin Phoenix have anything to do with this?
