Happy Holidays From Google

Posted by on Tue, Nov 10, 2009 at 12:47 PM

Google is working with 47 airports across the country to provide free airport Wi-Fi now through January 15, 2010.

Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) today announced that it is working with airports across the country as well as Boingo Wireless, Advanced Wireless Group, Airport Marketing Income and others to provide free Wi-Fi as a holiday gift now through January 15, 2010. The gift currently includes 47 airports, including Las Vegas, San Jose, Boston, Baltimore, Burbank, Houston, Indianapolis, Seattle, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando, St. Louis and Charlotte. Additionally, as a result of this project, Burbank and Seattle airports will begin offering airport-wide free Wi-Fi indefinitely.

Well, gee, that's sure nice of them. Note to other multi-billion-dollar multinational corporations: If you're going to have an evil empire, at least be nice about it.

bbbbut isn't google's corporate/internal motto something along the lines of "don't be evil" ??

The two airports (other than SeaTac) that I frequent most (Portland and Boise) both offer free internet access all the time, so I'm pretty underwhelmed.

As a frequent traveler it's awfully nice to have free wifi while sitting at an airport. Very glad to hear SeaTac will be joining the club.

I am just starting to get to the point where I get pretty irritated when an airport doesn't have free wifi. Enough of the mid-market airports have it nowadays that I'm starting to expect it (was at Minneapolis last week and was pretty surprised that they didn't have it).

This is pretty cool of Google... would have been nice to see Chicago, LA, or NYC airports on the list, though.

This isn't so much about being nice as it is an opportunity to make more money. You know your going to have to watch ads.

It's irritated me for some time that SeaTac doesn't offer free wi-fi. I mean, come on, freaking ORLANDO has free wi-fi.

I remember another era . . . getting soused in the airport lounge . . . making chit-chat with . . what's her face . . . no cell phone to connect me to the old ball and chain. We had a smoke together . . . then I discovered she was a bottle blond. God, what has become of us?

Google does a great job of self-governing, I think. They're way way way ahead of the laws, but they're being pretty responsible about their scope and power. I <3 Google.

It's about time, Sea-Tac! If stupid TSA and airport regulations mean I have to waste hours of my time waiting around, there might as well be free wifi as a distraction. Denver International has been much less horrible since they started offering the free wifi.

I'm at Sea-Tac terminal B now. same old for-fee AT&T wireless here. No sign of free. Also, Qweat customers are supposed to get access to AT&T hotspots, but they're not listed as an option here.
