Americablog Launches Boycott of DNC

Posted by on Mon, Nov 9, 2009 at 9:16 AM

Aravosis:

It's really more of a "pause," than a boycott. Boycotts sounds so final, and angry. Whereas this campaign is temporary, and is only meant to help some friends - President Obama and the Democratic party - who have lost their way. We are hopeful that via this campaign, our friends will keep their promises.

So please sign the Petition and take a Pledge to no longer donate to the DNC, Organizing for America, or the Obama campaign until the President and the Democratic party keep their promises to the gay community, our families, and our friends.

More info—and an itemized list of Obama and the DNC's slights and broken promises to the LGBT community—here.

I miss the Olde Dayes when activists did things to make changes instead of doing nothing and expecting change.

Slacktivism is worthless. Take to the streets, people or nothing is going to change....

Aravosis, aw, how presh.

He already knows that there are enough filthy rich dems out there to hit up to carry the slack of a few hundred thousand dollar shortfall brought on by this.

I'm all in. A more Republican Congress, and maybe another Republican president, are definitely the way to advance gay rights and equality. And what's with all that focus on health care. As if that means anything to the folks who elected Obama. And all the focus on making sure insurers can't exclude folks for pre-existing conditions. Name me one self-respecting gay male with HIV, or gay female with breast cancer, who cares remotely about that. So count me in. Republicans are the way to go. Hell, one even voted for the health care bill in the House.

Can't do it.

I was already boycotting them until the passed single payer health care nationally.

I think Baconcat makes a valid point. Once again Gay Americans are going to be heart broken when they find out that not donating to the DNC means nothing, their money is really not that important and the DNC continues to waltz along unaltered.

I want gay rights so badly. But this is Ralph Nader spelled differently. The mid-term elections are bearing down so not sure what a "pause" here really means other than hurting us.

Voting for a 3rd party candidate, starving the Dems for cash, both do so much more to help the Right than it does to move the overall agenda in our direction.

I think it would be productive to add to this a fund to help pro-equality candidates (from either party, if you happen to find one from the GOP).

In theory that's what HRC would do. But it's clear that they are simply part of the DNC now.

Well, donating toe the DNC doesn't seem to have any effect, not donating can't be any worse. I'm in!

Concern Trolls ("what if Rs take over?!!), nobody is asking to stop all donations to anybody. Just donate directly to candidates you trust or to a group like ActBlue(is there a gay version?) that will funnel your donations to proven progressives or gay rights supporters, not just all Dems in the Congress. The AFL-CIO has new leaders who say they will take the same tact on labor issues.

Don't worry, Goldman-Sachs, Phrma and insurance companies will take care of the Blue Dogs and DINOs that seem to have ObamaRahma's ear. Stop giving groups like HRC or NARAL that won't hold any politicians accountable on the specific issues they are supposed to represent.

So, on the eve of a huge contentious Senate vote on health care that appears to hinge on one or two votes, try to hamstring the party if they don't simultaneously take up the fight for one of the most unpopular planks of their platform? Yeah, great idea. That'll get you what you want.

Let's look at your typical donor - they can give to their local district dems (e.g. 43rd), to their county dems (e.g. the pro-Mallahan anti-Seattle KCDCC), to their state dems (e.g. the WSDCC), their state senate or hours dems, and/or to the DNC.

If one level doesn't support the issues you want, give to the level that does support your issues - don't reduce the total amount, just spread it around differently.

What about the Democrats' promise to the 51.5% of the population that just got written out of the healthcare bill?

Not donating is not going to do jack shit for gay rights, sorry.

#7 And how the fuck are they going to do that? You do realize that Obama and most Democrats don't support single-payer right? Never gonna happen. At best, you'll get a mixed system like France's. If you're holding out for single-payer, you might as well move or give up because it ain't gonna happen son.

They should open an escrow account that pays out if the Dems fulfill their promises. A boycott could be so much hot air, but an account with real money provides a real incentive. I know I'd contribute.

I sent this (which includes some verbiage from the article) to the our Democratic Senators after reading the article in the gay magazine Advocate, "Gays vs Democratic Party."

FACT 1. Total contributions from the gay community equal 1/5 of the total moneysthat come
from within the constituencies. Basically, we raise millions for the DNC and the
Democratic party.

FACT 2. The DNC and Democratic Party:
a. Are fond of our checkbooks; but at the same time hold a knife in the other
hand to stab us in the back.
b. Enjoy the cash flow.
c. Is less inclined to spend political capital on our behalf.

FACT 3. A gay-led boycot of the DNC and the Democratic Party would cause a domino
effect to occur with the 2010 midterm congressional elections at our door step.

FACT 4. "Stategic Rewards," is basically the contributions that the gay community would
make to the DNC and Democratic party based on the condition that legislation
is passed.

Examples: ENDA, the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell, and even the prospect of
getting DOMA off of the books.

Hence, false promises bring in no funds nor votes. So, withheld donations from the
gay community wouldn’t be token resistance; it would be a sticking point.

FACT 5. Only one piece of significant gay rights legislation passed by Congress was
signed by President Obama. It was ultimately appended to a defense spending
bill.
An APPENDANT...

FACT 6. Losses on the state level have only darkened impressions of the DNC and the
Democratic Party with the REVOCATION of EQUAL MARRIAGE RIGHTS in MAINE.
Even the NEW YORK STATE SENATE rejected a MARRIAGE EQUALITY BILL in
December when all 8 DEMOCRATS JOINED all the chamber's REPUBLICANS.

So, with this written, what will it take for DNC and Democrats to get off of their high promises and get into the act to be firm in their promises for gay equality?

Another Scott Brown Massachusetts upset?

PLEASE READ....

Thank you so much :-)
