The Fate of the Five Point!

Posted by on Fri, Nov 6, 2009 at 3:19 PM

Continuing to cheat tourists and drunks under new ownership.
  • Continuing to cheat tourists and drunks under new ownership.

Remember the rampant rumors at the end of September that world's best dive bar the Five Point was closing? Thanks be to drunk baby Jeebus, it's not true. But the OTHER rumor that a local club promoter was the new owner? True—it's Dave Meinert, who manages Blue Scholars, Common Market, etc., and produces the Capitol Hill Block Party. His soon-to-be-babymama/partner Mandy Park will be managing the place (she used to waitress there, and that's where she and Meinert met—awwww).

Will there be any changes? Nothing that's going to wreck the Five Point magic. Some of the duct-taped upholstery will be replaced, along with extra messed-up parts of the floor. Scrubbing has occurred. And a few updates to the food menu will happen on Monday: The coffee will now be Caffe Vita; liver and onions is back from yesteryear; and a couple more options for vegetarians will be added (including the Green Cat curry tofu scramble, with the recipe provided by the owner of the beloved bygone Green Cat Cafe).

It's good news for everybody who loves the Five Point. Cheers!

Dang, if I weren't on a diet I'd go for a CFS "5 Point Style" to celebrate - maybe I'll have to check out that curry tofu scramble instead.

The Five Points isn't even the best dive bar in the state. That honor belongs to the China Doll in Everett, hands down the sleaziest dive bar around.

Don't believe me? There's only one way to find out. Embrace the Doll. Write about it. You'll thank me for it.

Hooray! Meinert's come a long way from being that skinny kid hanging out at Penny University. The 5 Point's in good hands.

Stoked on that Green Cat Tofu Scramble! I hope they bring back the signature Green Cat sandwich, which has sunflower seeds, pesto, tomatoes, avocado & smoked provolone cheese. Genius!

I love that Green Cat gave them their recipe. It'd be great if other restaurants sought out beloved dishes from now-defunct local favorites and added them to their menu.

with a 'waitress' who shoves a customer (considered assault, and i'm on the fence about filing a charge), who had been standing patiently over an hour waiting for an adjoining table to finish their meal so as to sit down with the rest of our 9 person party, for no other reason than he requested she take our order finally, i find i dont much care for this cafe. While i would understand and think "he had it coming" if he had been drunk, or on drugs, or even had spent the previous hour harassing her, he was none of the above! Hell, my son is her age.. does she have a daddy complex or something? I've got a list of witnesses who told me, and i quote, "i did not find that an unreasonable request, i cant believe she shoved him like that!"
As for the food.. we never got to try it. Too bad, as we are extremely good tippers (upwards of 20%)

The 5-point is awsome, I worked their a couple of summers ago and had a blast. The food was great, the people I worked with were cool as hell and the drinks were super strong. It's a world famouse dive bar for a reason.
