I wonder how much this whole event cost the city. No doubt each of those cars get around 8mpg, and some of those cops standing around are there on their day off. Do they get overtime pay for this, what's that run $50-60 and hour?

@ 1, why don't write to the City Council and ask them to crack down on such wasteful spending.

I haven't been following this story (don't cops get killed fairly commonly?), so I'm a little unclear. At the risk of being a bit insensitive, what's with the hoopla?

@1 Wow.

@3 It's not common, last one was 15 years ago. From the Seattle Times:

The last Seattle police officer to die in the line of duty was Joselito "Lito" Barber, 26, who was killed Aug,. 13, 2006, when an SUV driven by Mary Rivas ran a red light and struck his patrol car. Rivas was sentenced to 20 years in prison for vehicular homicide and possession of cocaine in November 2007.

The last Seattle officer to be gunned down was Antonio Terry, 36, who was fatally shot on June 4, 1994

@1, worst comment of the year?

1. Police work is actually not all that dangerous. It's safer to be a cop than a taxi driver or construction worker.

2. Police officer deaths are actually at their lowest in decades. Deaths of innocent victims and police suspects, as well as beatings and usage of tasers are way up. And ethnic minorities tend to bear the brunt of this brutality. After all, the first state-regulated police forces in this country were slave patrols. They haven't changed much in their function since then.

3. None of this information is hidden or secret. A simply google search will suffice to learn more. Hell, Amnesty International and the ACLU recognize police brutality as a major problem in this country.

4. The Stranger needs support from the police to put on some of its events, like the Block Party. So much for "objective" journalism.

Thank you for turning off unregistered comments.

I went to the East Precinct to watch the processional because it's by my house - I didn't even connect that that was where Officer Brenton had been stationed.

@7 - Worst comment of the year, WTF? I didn't say they shouldn't be doing this, nor did I disparage the value of the officers life or service. I was simply asking how much this whole event costs!

But go ahead, keep making assumptions, douche.

I suspect that the majority of the officers in attendance are not on the clock. The cost of fuel, in the big picture, is negligent.

In short, this is probably not costing the city any more than the typical garden variety march/rally, or Critical Mass ride, or Seahawks game or Friday Night Fraternity Row melee.

@8: The Block Party isn't our event any more than Bumbershoot is. We're the media sponsor, we don't own it or run it or profit from it.

Awww, I miss Seattle. I miss being jaded and giving a crap at the same time, instead of just jaded. Nice procession, I hope they catch the guy who is responsible.

The Stranger's Brian Geoghagan is horrible at shooting videos. Please get someone with 1/10 of a clue about how to set up a shot.

@1 and 10 - It's not an "event". It's a necessary moment that all officers are taking to honor their fellow comrade. Thank you @12 for putting this into perspective.

@1 is just saying what any real fiscal conservative would say.

Most people who aren't in a ceremony or parade or funeral have had that thought at sometime, especially when they shut down all the roads just for one thing.
