Police Beat: The Problem With Internet Dating

Posted by Charles Mudede on Thu, Nov 5, 2009 at 12:28 PM

On 10-30-09, Officer Dirk Patin filed this report:

"I arrived and contacted victim, an Asian female. She was standing just outside of the Starbucks. She gave the following account: At approximately 10:30 pm, she was inside the Starbucks on 12th Av. She was there to meet an unknown black male from the internet. She saw a [black male] seated by himself on the southside of the store. She approached him and asked: "Do you happen to be waiting for anyone?" The black male responded by asking if she needed any help? He then quickly seemed angry when she told him, "No." The black male asked why she had approached him? At that point, she left his table, after apologizing, and walked to another table.

Immediately [the black male] stood and started yelling: "Why did you approach me? Are you a US citizen? Where do you live?" He then walked over to her and accused her of being a terrorist. He then ordered her to leave the store. She got up from the table and tried to leave for her safety. The suspect started pushing her with both hands. She walked out of the store and the suspect pushed her three more times on the back. [Finally], another male stopped the suspect from continuing his verbal and physical assault. The suspect then walked back into the Starbucks.

The suspect's account was similar to the victim's, but he added that he was offended by the victim because he thought she was a prostitute... Ofc Ducre read the suspect [his rights] and then transported him to the East Precinct. I responded to the East Precinct and completed the necessary paperwork. Sgt Guballa screened the arrest and the suspect subsequently was booked into KCJ for Assault.

The desired black man never materialized.

"He then walked over to her and accused her of being a terrorist."

That line is so 2002.

THE internet black man, eh?

You should have called her if you were going to ditch.

This kinda thing happens here all the time...I internet dated for almost a year and loved it when I encountered someone who obviously did not want to sit and talk with me when they saw how I looked in person. What did I do? I sat at the other end of the venue and had my drink/snack/coffee and waited for the "real" person to show up, which they never did. If you are going to internet date, give the courtesy of actually meeting and talking to the person for an hour.

But if she was Asian and the guy thought she looked like a hooker, then what's the problem?

When I accuse a woman of being a terrorist, I usually get laid. Something must b e wrong with the guy's technique.

Wait. Without the internet, wouldn't you have to walk up and talk to complete strangers even more?

If I were a man going to meet an internet date and saw someone matching the description of my date talking to the cops right outside the date location, I would probably bail. It's just so awkward when the police are involved.

I'm disturbed by how many times this man laid his hands on her before someone stepped in to help. When they saw him move to follow her from the Starbucks they should have stopped him. Awesome.

I ...I don't understand how this turned into a problem! It defies all logic and reason. The entire conversation should have gone:

Woman: "Do you happen to be waiting for anyone?"
Man: "Do you need some help?"
Woman: "No, I'm just meeting somebody here, and I've never met them, but they match your description."
Man: "Oh. Well, I'm not your guy."
Woman: "Okay. Never mind!"

Unless one of these people had some sort of communication problem (drunk, hyperaggressive body language, mutually unintelligible English, et cetera), I straight-up don't understand why this escalated. Am I missing something?

Who meets with someone from the internet without knowing what they look like? Doesnt everyone have a photo for online dating now?

@14 - The problem is the guy's logic does not match your Earth logic.

@16, 18, 20: Yeah, but it doesn't say that she "explained", but merely "apologized." Maybe he thought she "apologized" for taking him to being a john.

But yes, he's clearly crazy too. I can't believe nobody intervened when he started yelling. Good job, Starbucks.
