Geez, I wish I'd known this when I was in Europe...when drinking outside we ended up just buying boxed or screw-off top wine to save the trouble. Unfortunate.

er.. you do this with a pencil, right? you can do it with a stick too. you just have to know what you're doing. position spear-like object at top of corkscrew, bludgeon the other end with a rock or whatever is sitting next to you on the banks of the seine, and make sure the bottle isn't pointed anywhere near your eye.

I've used a similar technique when I had severe constipation and didn't have recourse to a laxative.

Trick learned from my sister: always buy thin tubes of mascara. Perfect for pushing the cork inside the bottle, you just gotta finish it in one night. If you do it carefully enough, you won't spill a drop, either.
