Demise of the 520 Bridge

Posted by on Thu, Nov 5, 2009 at 12:38 PM

A simulation to consider on this stormy afternoon:

City Council President Richard Conlin told me that I should really watch this video (which has been out for a while). "Yeah, it is going to sink," he says in this week's paper. "I have been in the pontoons and seen the water leaking in," he says. Conlin lays out his plans for replacing the bridge—and charming the legislature into paying to do it right—over here. You can also see what could happen to the 520 bridge in an earthquake over here. Good day.

Are the 520 and 99 structures the only shit that can be destroyed around here? What about the Space Needle? And the Aurora Bridge? The Locks? How many skyscrapers do we have? I mean come on. Where are the rest of our fucking movies? This is a basic public service and we don't need Jerry Fucking Bruckheimer to come here and do it for us.

And don't tell me Mt Rainier can't erupt. It might! And how would that look? Well? Show me. I pay my fucking taxes people.

When did the state get into the disaster movie business? Too much time on their hands, I think. Yes, it's going to sink. We can picture it happening. It's easy to picture, actually, just as it's easy to picture the viaduct collapsing. How much does it cost to whip these video postcards up anyway?

@ 1, all those other structures you mention are a testimony to the ingenuity, no, perfection of man made design, and will all survive a 12.0 earthquake and the eruption of Yellowstone if they happened simultaneously. Only 520 and Alaskan Way Viaduct pose a danger.

Oh, and Safeco Field too. The Kingdome was indestructible, but the retractable roof is going to fall on everyone's heads one of these days.

Mt. Rainier is actually more likely to start collapsing and forming huge landslides that flood the river basins and downstream towns all the way towards the port of seattle

A little reporting please?! Your story says Conlin has some ideas about replacing 520, but when I read down to that section, you let him saying nothing. No specifics. No big idea. No reporting. Why do I bother? Why should anyone read the SLOG or Stranger?

I couldn't find anything online, but I have a fuzzy memory of a section of the bridge breaking off in a storm once.

The old section of I-90 sank—it wasn't totally nature's fault, but the reason for sinking was the same. The scenario isn't hard to believe.

Plus, if I was fishing for projects, I'd make these sorts of videos all day long.

Was this a Roland Emmerich or a Michael Bay film? Oh wait, this shit is amateur, I did not see a single explosion.

I want one of the whole city being brought down in a fiery plane crash. THEN an earthquake.

Good thing we're building the pontoons now, before we replace the outer lanes with HOV and add an inner lane each way for light rail and bus use.

@7 for the annoyingly insightful win.

I couldn't visualize it, I'm not like that, so this helped me. Maybe there were those stakeholder type people who were in the same (leaky) boat as me, so I bet this helped. Same as the viaduct video, I never could have have pictured that.

If we could just arrange to have "stakeholders" on the bridge when that happened ....

Sinking the 520 would be a good start, but I'm concerned that the people of Medina, Bellevue, et al., could still drive their boats across. Hence we need floating mines and concertina wire. Maybe Burmese tiger pits on the north and south ends of the lake, too.

@19 - well, we could always set up the artillery guns that used to be there, again, and sink the boats.

I smell TUNNEL!!! Maybe the Surface Tension option would work - has anyone talked to Critical Float? Are they protesting/pushing personal peddle boats?
We need committee's, public comment, referendum for goodness sake!

If there is anything these simulated destruction videos can teach us, it is about the futility of man's efforts to pacify nature.
