Ice Cream for Breakfast!

Posted by on Thu, Nov 5, 2009 at 9:24 AM

For the fall and winter months, Molly Moon's menu is expanding to include a warm alternative to ice cream: Oatmeal! But, since it's Molly Moon's, you can get that healthy bowl of organic oatmeal topped with ice cream.

The oatmeal breakfast will be offered every weekend morning from 8 am-1 pm at the Wallingford location and 9 am-1 pm at the Capitol Hill location. And for this special breakfast, they're even bringing back the infamous bacon maple flavor.

Having not tried it yet, I can't decide if this is oatmeal-with-ice cream thing is a delicious invention or a disgusting gimmick. I hope to find out this weekend. In the mean time, I'm sure you commenters have an opinion! You always do. ("It's overpriced!" "It's overrated!" "It's making America fat!" "Vaccinated pit bulls ate my ice cream!" Whine on, whiners.)

I finally have a breakfast spot walking distance from my work. Bomb diggity.

I was deeply skeptical of this notion, but I was wrong. It's brilliant and delicious. The key is the toppings bar - so many tasty things to add (and things that cut the heaviness of the ice cream). It's genius.

Looks like the ice cream bubble has burst.

Who the fuck wants ice cream for breakfast in November?

I was just about to take a bite from my ice cream when a Mormon bicyclist being towed by a pitbull cruised by and startled me so badly that I dropped the ice cream onto the sidewalk.

@3 Alaskans eat the most ice cream per capita so I don't think cold weather has much to do with ice cream consumption.

How can we complain about the price if you don't tell us the price?

Nice! My mom used to get me to eat oatmeal and cream of wheat by adding a scoop of vanilla on top. Delicious!

@2 I'm curious to hear what some of the toppings are! I assume stuff like fruit compote, nuts, and various things like that?

And @7: I don't know the price. But in the past, Slog commenters have whined about Molly Moon's being overpriced because it's about $3 for a scoop. I don't think that's too much for locally made, fresh ice cream, but some people like the idea of getting a gallon of cheap ice milk for $3 instead, I suppose.

Love that they acknowledge Capitol Hill wakes up an hour later than Wallingford! (At best)

My mom used this trick, too. Ice cream is good on oatmeal, but it's necessary on Malt-o-meal.

@10 usual stuff like you mentioned but I was especially excited by the chopped crystallized ginger.

The Pumpkin Clove ice cream at Molly Moon's is outrageously good. Can someone teach them how to make a waffle cone though? They're always undercooked and tough to chew.

@9, yes it was available in Wallingford last fall & winter, but only on Sundays. I'm glad it was successful enough to try to expand it.

It seemed like a child's scoop was more than enough, and the toppings bar is awesome. what makes the whole enterprise worthwhile, though, is the availability of hot Vivace coffee to accompany the oatmeal.

Keep your feckin' ice cream, gimme an Irish oatmeal with a lovely shot of whiskey if you don't mind.

That sounds delicious, though I wish it wasn't just on weekends. I'd go before work on weekdays if I could.

Ice cream and oatmeal is old school and tested, tried and true. It was offered up as one of the add-ins at the Mix on the ave. when I worked there ten years ago.

God I miss the Mix--a real Ave institution! [But I don't think it ever did real well besides the weekends--though I could be wrong?]
