The Pro-Housing Levy party was still in the early stages when we arrived shortly after 7 pm. The cheese plates looked fresh and hardly anyone touched the giant tray of tiramisu provided by Tutta Bella. But, spirits were high, even if attendance was not.
And the night belonged to the volunteers. Anna Markee, who is the Seattle Outreach Director at the Housing Development Consortium, was proud of the campaign they ran and praised the many volunteers who helped make over 40,000 calls over the past six weeks (and the return rate on those calls was somewhere in the 80% range, Markee says).
Every volunteer that walked through the door was entered in a raffle for prizes donated by local businesses, and the drink menu consisted of cocktails dedicated to their efforts. There was a Visibility Visionary, a Forum Fanatic, and a Doorbelling Dynamo, which consisted of whiskey, sweet vermouth, and an orange twist (and one other ingredient that we forgot... but it was a pretty pink color, so it probably had something to do with that).
As for tonight's outcome, one of the volunteers says she's "hopeful, but anxious." And Markee says she doesn't trust the early polls, but doesn't deny that their chances are looking good since this would be the fifth renewal for the Housing Levy.
