Reading Tonight: HULK HOGAN!

Usually, bookstores take Election Night off, but there are a ton of readings tonight, including a book about murder and honor at Elliott Bay Book Company, a book about a long trek home at University Book Store, a discussion about, er, "fierce" leadership at the Pan Pacific Hotel, and the UW reading series Castalia at the Hugo House.

There are two readings at Town Hall tonight. Brian Fagan reads from The Great Warming: Climate Change and the Rise and Fall of Civilizations, which is about how other civilizations got fucked by climate change. And Rich Benjamin also reads at Town Hall. Searching for Whitopia is a good-but-pretty-slow book about how white people are fleeing other races to live behind fences in the country. I think this may be a case where the reading will be more entertaining than the book it is promoting.

But the real one-two punch is at Third Place Books tonight. At 5 pm, they have HULK HOGAN. That is not a misprint: Hulk Hogan will be reading at Third Place Books tonight. Hulk Hogan is basically the opening act for John Irving, who also reads at Third Place Books tonight at 7:30 pm. It kind of makes sense: They both like wrestling! I wrote about John Irving a few days ago on Slog—I like his early stuff but have not at all enjoyed his recent stuff. Still, I have to make this the reading of the night. You can read the rules for the Irving event here.

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here. And if you're planning on staying in and you're looking for personalized book recommendations, feel free to tell me the books you like and ask me what to read next over at Questionland.

Please correct:

SIGNING ONLY
The one-and-only WWE superstar reveals the personal tragedy that he has overcome since 2007 and his family’s upheaval.

I can't picture him reading either.

I think "Searching For Whitopia" looks like the perfect book to be carrying under my arm when I go visit the in-laws in their all-white (except for the Mexican roofers and gardeners) enclave in south Utah for Thanksgiving. Did I say all white? I mean 110% white. I mean so white it makes Clorox look like blood. They come around and knock on your door if you leave your garage door open for more than two hours. Those golf carts on the cover? That's how they get to the mailbox. Oh, my God, it's so white.

I will be very drunk.

FYI: Hulk Hogan fans were cool, well-behaved (though appropriately EXCITED!!!!!!!), and as I left the store (I work there), everything was chugging along nicely.

I anticipate a much different situation occurred with Irving and his signing 'rules'... *hock, spit*, Sigh.

Isn't it always the case the openers are better than the headliners?
