McGinn at Red Square Today

Slog tipper Terry Nguyen writes:

Hey Stranger,

Thought I'd send along some photos I took of Mike McGinn when he dropped by the UW campus today — and stood next to one of those itinerant everybody's-going-to-Hell preachers — in case you wanted to put them on Slog or something.

He sort of danced around my question of what he was going to do to control crime in the U-District (something he'd failed to answer at Electionland, which he blamed on the time limit and complexity of the answer), saying he'd have to focus on community development as well as law enforcement, etc.

More photos by Terry Nguyen after the jump.

And how about another photo of the proselytizer freak?

If he wins, will he have staff dress him?

He looks like his pants leg is accidentally tucked into his shoe.

Do these guys have sympathetic print shop friends, or do they just blow their hard earned cash on those signs? That's gotta cost a pretty penny. To bad he forgot to put pot on there before he made it, that sticker just RUINS the professionalism.

Apparently someone doesn't like Microsoft's new search engine.

That preacher is against porn, pot and fantasy? That's pretty much my plan for this evening.

Also, the way to reduce crime in the U-District is to get rid of all those pesky students. They do a lot of drunk, stupid things and they also make pretty easy targets. Barring that, you'll never reduce crime without a vast police presence.

Also, he's against "free-sex?" Like, we should pay? Seriously?

Jesus saves people from fantasy? Like, as in daydreaming, imagination or aspirations? What a wet blanket, man. No wonder fewer and fewer people will hang with him these days.

Also, I love the kid in the tan jacket staring at him, like he's studying this kook for the purposes of a sociology paper.

(Sorry, I'm not living in Seattle right now, so I'm not keeping up with the mayoral race.)

The primary color scheme is a bit much. Heh.

Thighs o'thunder! I like that he wore the his best yellow slicker for the kids.

@2 - that'd be the pant leg he'd need to tuck to keep out of his bike chain on the way over... maybe.

I see this guy and his ilk all the time in Red Square, and I'm always terribly tempted to ask him very politely if, since apparently God hates "free-sex", I should begin paying my husband for it.

Tucked right pants leg + Bright yellow slicker = Guy who rides bike.

I'm just glad the stupid anti-choice "warning: genocide photos ahead" people weren't in red square.

@7 that kid was actually debating with him for the better part of an hour. (I am just to the right of these pictures).

I love how most of the things on the list are abstract nouns (e.g., "fantasy," "pride") and then he includes "drunkard" on the list. A little bit of grammatical inconsistency always livens things up. Also, I didn't realize the Bible forbade "pot." The blue tape is a nice contrast to the warm colors used elsewhere on the sign.

If that's how he tucks his pant leg, he's going to get it caught in his chain anyways. Not Good Enough.

Besides, in Seattle, Bike Riding Guy typically wears all black, with no light.

@5: I know it's fun to bash on the UW students, but we have nothing to do with the rapidly expanding crime rate around here (I suppose we do make "easy targets", but I don't see how a student is any easier to rob than anyone else. Are you implying that there's a naivete factor or something? Because if you are, I call bullshit. Everyone carries their phone and their wallet and everyone also knows to play it safe at night. Or at least UW students do, because we get at least 2 emails a week about armed robberies or other crimes in our neighborhood). I take it you "drunk, stupid" comment is directed at the fraternities, which is totally fair, but I think more people should think twice about making light of what is a very, very, very serious crime problem in an important Seattle neighborhood.

Actually, the entire U Dist is part of the University Police area - it's only once you go N of 45th that it gets to a quasi state.

So a mayor is severely limited in the actions they can take.

@20- You agreed with the two points I made, so I'm not sure why you're offended.

@18- You're right about the pant leg being ready to go in his chain. Between the belly and the beard, I'd say he looks like a recumbent rider.

@21: I'm well aware of that. McGinn wasn't.

Also, the vast majority of U-District crime I've been hearing about since the beginning of 2009 has taken place off campus, i.e. within the SPD's jurisdiction.
