The latest complaint from domestic partnership opponent Larry Stickney, via CBS News:

Exposing the signers won't accomplish anything - the Stranger has repeatedly reported on the signature gatherers deceiving people into signing. What does their signature show? That they were manipulated?
I'm all for the passage of R-71, and I voted in favor of it. I guess I just don't see what releasing the signatures is meant to accomplish.

And that is precisely why they don't want to release the names of the people who signed the initiative. It has nothing to do with the fear of bodily harm. It has everything to do with people being able to know who stands against gay people.
With the release of the names you can find out who owns what business and boycott that business. They may hate gays but they love their money. Well, gay people (and the people who love them) should be able to know who stands against them and be able to take their business somewhere else.

The Gay Lobby has lots of chandeliers and foofy drapes, and an excellent bar, but if you want comfortable seating and good light for reading, your best bet is the Lesbian Lobby.

For my own personal safety I want to know who signed it. The signers of those petitions I want to stay away from. After all, they are more likely than most to want to beat the shit out of me.

@15: The Bisexual Lobby is garishly decorated and constantly full of young actresses and musicians. There are signs on everything that say "BISEXUAL LOBBY" with a minimal amount of seating, all of it rather uncomfortable in spite of the occupants' constant claims of comfort.
Also, while every exit is also an entrance, the occupants of the Bisexual Lobby would rather you stick to the posted entrances, but they do want you to know that they would be okay if you entered in the back entrance, even though they aren't quite sure if they've allowed such a thing since they were fairly toasted that one night at L.A. Reid's houseparty when those rumors started.

I figure, people know I'm a lesbian and can give a good guess as to where I stand on human rights issues. How do they know this? From the way I look, the businesses I frequent, fund-raising events I've participated in, etc.
Why can't I have the privilege of knowing those on the flip side? Maybe I'm wrong in thinking this way. I don't hold any anger towards the folks who signed said petition, but if it were someone I knew, I could maybe have "that" conversation with them. After all, people are constantly shoving their beliefs/views down my throat. Let's even the playing field, I say.

I want to see the names on the petitions to make sure someone didn't put my name on it! The forms have to be legit. That should be a major legal argument in this case, and is the main reason Timmy the Watch Peddler is so against disclosure. If he can run his initiative campaigns without ever showing his work, he can just add names at random from the voter database!

There are more LGBT folks living in the city than there are African Americans or Latinos, and almost as many as there are Asian Americans. And of course, these populations aren't discrete. Gays come in all colors.
That's the way things are. So, if you want to make sure that a significant base of the population is happy with you, the easiest thing you can do is work with us for equality.
