O They Will Know We Are Christians...

Posted by Dan Savage on Mon, Nov 2, 2009 at 2:30 PM

...by our obscene phone calls. KIRO TV reported on this case in early October:

The pastor of Fircrest’s Liberty Baptist Church has pleaded guilty to making obscene phone calls to female baristas at a coffee stand near his church. Randy Brock, 41, entered the plea Sept. 30. He was sentenced to one year in jail with the sentence suspended. He also was fined $300.

A 21-year-old barista at Café Elite said Tuesday that the calls went on for months and were always from a man with a distinct Southern accent. “Asking sexually explicit questions and questions about people wearing undergarments, and there was heavy breathing involved in the phone call,” she said. She did not want her name used.... At first, Brock told police he was not the one making the calls, but under questioning he admitted making several harassing and obscene calls to Café Elite. He told the officer that the barista wore revealing clothing and that might be the reason he made the harassing phone calls.

And who do you think inspired that barista to go to work in such revealing clothing in the first place? There's a hint buried in the "What We Believe" section of Liberty Baptist Church's website: "We believe that Satan... seeks continually to frustrate the purposes of God and ensnare the sons on man." It seems clear that the devil himself ensnared Pastor Brock and he was the real victim here. Yet according to the "History" section of Liberty Baptist Church's website, Pastor Brock was with the church from February of 2007 "until the Lord moved him on in October of 2009."

The Lord moved Pastor Brock on? That seems a strange way to describe the works of Satan.

"sons on man"? Freudian slip?

Cafe Elite? I'm sure the conservatives in the area get no end of pleasure deriding liberals about that.

I just had contact at my work with a man that claimed to be a minister. He proceded to act like a spoiled 2 year-old who's binky had been taken away by monsters. It was one of the most embarrassing and inexusable tantrums thrown by a grown man that I have ever seen. And it was about absolutely nothing.

One could develop a prejudice against Christians based on the nearly uniformly terrible behavior they exhibit.

Let this be a lesson to what lengths, those that want to hurt the church are willing go in order to have little stories like this posted by people like Savage who have a fervent hate for the church.

Now more than ever we people of faith need to not only talk a good game but reflect in our actions the teachings and commandments found in the Book of Life. Because there are hyenas and vultures waiting for just one fall from one of us to ravage the flock.

@5 - Well, when you slather yourself in barbecue sauce and decide to go play dead in the middle of the Serengeti, a ravaging is to be expected.

There's plenty more deserving people to ravage. No interest in ravaging flocks of Christians. That's what the shotgun is for.

LovesLeotard says:

"Now more than ever we people of faith need to not only talk a good game but reflect in our actions the teachings and commandments found in the Book of Life."

Guess what? Some of us have more faith in our pinkies than you have in your entire being. And we're not straight.

Some of us are holier than Swiss, but you can't get past your prejudice and realize someone else might be as good as you perceive yourself to be.

You may have this obscure "book of life" but we have the Bible to counter it. And the Bible doesn't condemn us anywhere.

This just in: sexually repressed conservative minister resorts to obscene phone calls to get his jollies!

There is a reason why it's so often ultra-conservative dudes that do stuff like this. Teach a man to be afraid of his own dick for 41 years, and he loses the ability to express his sexuality in appropriate ways.

Loveschild, is this pastor welcome to preach from your pulpit? Please answer this question, don't ignore it.

God created both Satan & Lingerie Espresso Stands, so, ultimately, i guess he bears the responsibility for the pastor's temptation...

@10,

That's one possibility. Another is that people are drawn to conservative religions so they have an excuse when they do give in to temptation: Satan made 'em do it!

@11,

Don't expect much in reply or content. LovesChafing has proven him/her/itslelf to be a bot. No real person there, just a machine programmed to reply a certain way...much like the republicants. It won't pass the Turing test.

We just need to start treating this thing like crabs. A little shampoo, a little comb, all gone.

@5

"to what lengths, those that want to hurt the church are willing go"?
Seems to me Dan read the news. And then went to the church's website and did a little reading. And then posted a short snarky article about hypocrisy and sexual harassment. He didn't exactly walk uphill both ways through the snow to spread his 'fervent hate'.

And Loveschild, why AREN"T you pissed off about this pastor's behavior? You claim to be a member of his community (in the greater christian sense) so his behavior as a representative of that community should at least make you mad. Even if you forgive him on principle, that doesn't mean he's magically not a harasser.

"Pastor, there are espresso stands where nearly nude harlots serve coffee and offer sexual favors!"
"Really, where? I mean, never fear! I will put an end to this menace."
"Where is my phonebook?"

And for the record, it seems he actually called a regular coffee stand that makes money by selling coffee. Dumbass...

11@ All of us ( and yes that includes all those who give their flesh unto corrupting passions ) are deserving of a second chance cause God is the God of the impossible, he makes way where there is none and he transformed the most wicked into the most humble servant. All for His glory. However, until he shows that truly he's been truly transformed and proven that he has learn to refuse such temptations, this pastor in question would not be allowed to preach from the pulpit of any church that wants to truly exemplify the light of Jesus Christ unto this world.

Next time, register, you have a beautiful handle.

It is a totally regular coffee stand, no bikinis or anything unusual. It's a drive-thru stand just down the road. (they're right down the road from me). The low-hanging fruits of temptation.

When I lived in central Tacoma I dreamed of residing in the delightfully quaint town of Fircrest just the other side of Hwy 16. So charming with such a lovely golf course. Little did I know there was a parson madly wanking away in the pews as visions of taking liberties with coffee dispensing women danced through his god infected mind. Gives a different meaning to "Dickensian."

No, 10, Hernandez, I think you have it wrong. I think that most of us have a basically good internal monitor for behavior. We don't lie, we don't cheat, we don't do badly unto others....in short, we are good humanists. My experience with really insanely rigid Christians is that they lack that same monitor. They need someone to tell them what to do 24/7, in every part of life, or they'd be acting badly all over the place. They think we're bad, but they are REALLY bad, not being innately good humanists as were are.

So the problem for this pastor is that nowhere in the Good Book does it say, "Thou shalt not harass servers in the coffee drive-thru." So he didn't know not to do it.

We can hardly blame him for his confusion.

Loveschild, you don't live by the Bible, which has been demonstrated here again and again and again. You pick and choose what you want to follow, and ignore what you don't. Meanwhile you slam people you hate over the head with the Bible, attacking them for not following your cherry picked version of Christianity. You are one of the hypocrites who prays on the street corner to be seen my others.

Loveschild says, "All of us ( and yes that includes all those who give their flesh unto corrupting passions ) are deserving of a second chance"--unless, of course, you happen to disagree with Loveschild, and then she/he/it can slam you with her own prejudice while claiming she/he/it is being subjected to prejudice. Loveschild, I wish you really believed everyone deserved a second chance, but all you've really demonstrated is that you believe you're allowed a double-standard.

LC doesn't claim to live by the Bible, it claims to live by the "book of life," which I have to assume is kinda like the Necronomicon...flaky and fictitious.
