The American Way

Posted by Charles Mudede on Sun, Nov 1, 2009 at 1:15 PM

If you can't beat 'em, make 'em American:

New York (CNN) — For the first time since 1982, an American man won the New York City Marathon on Sunday.

Meb Keflezighi, 34, broke the tape in the 26.2-mile course with a personal best time of 2:09:15.

Keflezighi emigrated in 1987 to San Diego, California. One of 11 children, Keflezighi fled with his family from war-ridden Eritrea during its bloody conflict with Ethiopia. He became a U.S. citizen in 1998.

"If you can't beat 'em, make 'em American: "

WTF? It seems as if you're suggesting that he was forced to become an American, so that we can 'use' him to win something.

Rest easy, Charles. We won't be 'using' you to win any awards.

Charlest,

When I saw the title of this post on my RSS feed, I assumed it'd be you writing about the NYC Marathon winner being an Eritrean-born American.

Exactly who "made" him an American? My guess is that he did it of his own free will.

Charles, are you really this much of a jizzwad, or is all this just a jizzwad internet persona? I have trouble sleeping at night knowing that there's someone out there who's not only paying you for your idiotic opinions, but is actually paying to inflict them on other people. What is your problem with people actually choosing to live here and not spending all their time waxing bitter about everything?

Indeed. How arrogant of an American newspaper to refer to an American citizen as an American.

Of course, failure to do so would illicit charges of racism from you, Charles.

So that's nice. You always have something to write about.

Charles, feel free to go back to where ever the hell you came from. Seriously, some people actually come to this country to become an American. And you know what? Some of them actually become more American. Frankly, more American than you are...

I always find the country designation pretty funny considering how all the athletes will jump from country to country. Like Legat, Meb is American, but both are immigrants. That being said, Ryan ran a hell of a race as well. Americans are indeed becoming more competitive in distance running.

Isn’t that the essential premise of America?

How is this uniquely American? The Japanese did it to Konishiki, the World Sumo Champion.
