Scary Movies for Your H'ween Eyeballs

Lindy hates scary movies, and personally I'm not one for the a-hockey-mask-wearing-killer's-on-the-loose-so-I'll-just-go-off-in-the-woods-alone-in-my-bikini genre. But a truly GOOD scary movie has a healthy emetic effect on the psyche.

So, for Best Scary Movie I Can Think of Right Now (in Honor of H'ween), I would like to nominate:

The Devil's Backbone (available on DVD, short review to be found here)

No breasts, just a giant ticking time bomb and period-piece sheer terror.

Also: Last night I watched part of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me and became too creepified and had to turn it off. Had weird dreams. Feel good today. Emetic!

Also: The symphony is playing along live to Psycho tonight and tomorrow night. Best idea ever. FREAK OUT.

The Night of the Hunter. I still have dreams about that one. It's in black and white, with Robert Mitchum playing a murderer posing as an evangelical minister in order to get his hands on some bank loot he knows is hidden.....where?...and chasing two little kids he thinks might have it.

After seeing this I have never heard the old hymn "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms" without a shiver.

I love Night of the Hunter. By today's standards, some of it almost rolls into camp (the boy's acting, for one), but it's shot beautifully, and the story still holds up.

I couldn't understand Fire Walks With Me well enough to be creeped out by it.

The Devil's Backbone is creepy to a point, and is beautifully filmed, but the overall story is pretty lame.

I love The Devil's Backbone! I would include The Changeling --- the one starring George C. Scott, NOT the one starring Angelina Jolie. The seance scene and the scene immediately following it still give me chills. It is even set in Seattle (although it was really filmed in Denver).

"Fire Walks With Me" is a comedy.

TP: Fire Walk With Me is David Lynch's most underappreciated work, a masterpiece in my opinion. Does it all make sense? Of course not. But I've seen it four or five times and it gets better every time. Trust me. And no, it's not a comedy. Does this Fnarf character feel the need to comment on every single goddamn post? It's a little ridiculous.

Good one, @7.

Plus, if you have little ones, and you want to give them nightmares for weeks with subliminal images, check out The Shining.
