Last Night on Top Chef

Posted by on Thu, Oct 29, 2009 at 2:56 PM

By popular demand, this post has been placed after the jump. Everybody for whom it was a spoiler: I hate a spoiler very, very much—my sincere apologies.

Cocky? I can deal with that.

Missed Top Chef last night, but apparently Mike Isabella—who got typecast as the Jersey jerk, though Ashley Merriman said he's a stand-up guy—got sent packing for undercooked leeks. It's kind of a shocker, as he's looked very strong all along. The Washington Post has an online interview with him, including his response to accusations of sexism:

So, you think no girl can top you as a cook? A chef? What makes you so sure?

Mike Isabella: That was a joke. I don't know why people take everything so seriously. I make a lot of jokes. I don't claim to be better than everybody else, but I try to win every day and be better every day myself.

I was raised in a broken family by my mother and my sister so I have plenty of respect for women. It was sarcastic...

Um, you know, you say it, they play it, that's exactly right. Cocky? I can deal with that. Sexist? Not one bit. Not oooone bit.

He also predicts:

Final 3, it's a given now that I'm not there. Looks like it's gonna be Mike, Brian and Kevin. Jen's starting to fall apart it looks like.

And here's a huge burn:

If you were to enter a restaurant where Robin [Leventhal, of Seattle's late Crave] is the chef, what would you order?

Mike Isabella: Nothing.

Also, he says he doesn't watch T.V.

The one time I ate at Crave I was sick a few hours later. And that is NO JOKE.

I would rather be killed before eating anything Robin cooked.

BETHANY BABY you are violating the at minimum 24 hour media blackout on reality show spoilers for us kids with DVRs and not enough time.

Gawker never gives it away when they laud over Top Chef every week :(

He also assumed that Jenn was a pastry chef. Fuck him and his "jokes". I'm glad to see him go, and while I have no real love for Robin, it was great seeing him go before her. And in what world did he look really strong? He's clearly not one of the top 4.

@swearagen,

There is no such thing as a 24 hour waiting period for show spoilers.
Once it has aired it is out there. It is not the internets job to protect you from spoilers. It is your job to avoid them.

Didn't I do this last week?

Yeh, it's my job to avoid the GIANT HEADLINE SAYING WHO WAS ELIMINATED on the blog I refresh 10 times per day at work.

Like I said, Gawker makes the same type of posts for Top Chef every week but they at least hide the spoilers behind a few other clicks.

I don't watch the show, but that guy deserves to be aufed for those trousers alone.

Plus, SLOG has been pretty responsive to requests from readers in the past not to reveal these types of things within a roughly 24 hour period and had been hiding the outcomes after the jump so we had gotten used to not being tipped off before we watched the recorded episode in question. Guess that has stopped being standard practice now. Boo.

@Swearengen: I am such a luddite that I forget that television-saving technology exists. I'm sorry!

Actually, I'm kind of annoyed too. I was going to watch it on the web tonight.

Sigh.

Uh oh, Dan's pissed. I guess now we can expect BJC to mysteriously disappear from Slog and start up seattlebaconblog.org.

I'm just glad it's getting whittled down to just a few people. When these shows start, there's too many people to keep track of. I like the smaller groups with more focus on each person.

I'm glad Mike's gone, I didn't like him at all. Too arrogant.

That spoiler really sucked. I LOVE Top Chef, but haven't had a chance to watch it yet and was hoping to tonight. Good of you to not ruin it for anyone else.

Um, I don't say this in any attempt to justify my spoiler (spoilage?), but: Even if you know who got thrown off, don't you want to see it anyway? I do.

i do want to see it anyway and you are forgiven!

You don't want to miss Padma Lakshmi flirting with Natalie Portman.

Jen is just self-destructing. She started strong and self-confident but now, she's just whiny and sad. Still don't know what Robin is doing there. Hate the younger brother, Mike, but he seems very talented. Mike was annoying - he just wasn't funny as he believes himself to be. Eli is a bit of wild card but I think Kevin, Bryan and Mike will make it to the finals.

I did end up watching it. It was still good, but it really takes a lot of the fun out of it if you know who gets sent packing. I think that Kevin is going to win the whole thing and agree that Mike and Bryan will probably be the other 2 finalists.

Robin is a goddamn disgrace. You think she talks a lot on the show? You should have seen her when she was diagnosed with cancer and going through chemo in the kitchen at Chapel with a straw up her nose doing a ton of coke with the kitchen manager. It's outrageous that she's trying to tell the world about how healthy she is and her struggles when a lot of us who actually work in the industry know her as a huge coke head - before, during, and after her cancer.
She has no business being on that show - never mind making it as far as she has. Great TV.
