#5 - I'm not so sure those are American soldiers. They no longer wear the green camo from what I understand. But, I could be wrong.

American soldiers no longer wear those uniforms. They could be American airmen, although I'm not entirely convinced that they are American military at all.

@10 (& 11): American military go to France quite often for training exercises and sometimes ceremonies. When I was stationed in Germany in 1994, I was a part of a group of people from the 3rd Infantry Division that went to Saint-Dié to take part in a celebration to commemorate their liberation during WWII. It's true that there are no American military bases there, but there are plenty of American servicemembers there on official business just the same.
