Gore Vidal on Roman Polanski

Posted by on Wed, Oct 28, 2009 at 12:18 PM

Via The Atlantic:

I really don’t give a fuck. Look, am I going to sit and weep every time a young hooker feels as though she’s been taken advantage of?

Good lord. It get's even worse as the interviewer continues to question him about the Polanski case. At this point Gore Vidal really just needs to fade away. At this point he doesn't have anything interesting or insightful to add to national or international dialogues. He just comes off as a bitter old queen that is stricken with grief, illness and has outlived his era and usefulness.

I keep thinking Vidal is dead. What a charming way to be reminded that the old gas bag is still among us.

Has anyone trustworthy and impartial written up the details this whole Polanski deal? Any links would be greatly appreciated.

Vidal has every right to be a dirty old man...the girl WAS whored out by her mother, BTW.

Funny, the New York Times had an article just yesterday about "young hookers" and how they are indeed taken advantage of. It's not exactly a secret that teenage "hookers" usually aren't doing it because it's fun. Fuck you, Gore Vidal.

I love Vidal so much, offensive or no. He's immune to flattery and never panders, interested only in what he thinks and why. Flippin' awesome fella.

And I can only wish to someday be as uninterested in the latest Polanski news as Vidal. I'm as infected by the moralizing hubbub as any Slog poster. I note Samantha Geimer on Friday filed a motion begging the appeals court to just drop the case because the whole process is hurting her too much.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/20…

Of course, it's out of her hands now - we're out to slake our bloodlust. 33 years later, she's seeing once again how her begging us to stop, please stop, won't do her any good.

@ 12, you and she would have a point if this was about the rape rather than the flight from justice.

Learning that Polanski paid to sodomize a 13 year old doesn't make him any more sympathetic, oddly enough.

Stay classy, Vidal.

Wow! A fine example of a sexual libertine old fart if there ever was one.

The anything-goes sexual lobbyists must be so proud.

@17,

Assuming the girl was whored out by her mother, it doesn't mean the girl was in on it or that she wasn't raped. In short, SHE wasn't a whore.

Jesus.

If Gore Vidal were here I'd punch him in the face, old guy or not. Fuck you, you rapist-apologising son of a bitch.

I wish I owned one of his books so I could feed it into my shredder and send him a photo.

Apparently someone asked Gore this provocative question and received a predictable reply. A mere reading of his essays - say "Reflections on a Sinking Ship" - reveal he's certainly more intelligent than almost any other current American writer and fearlessly frank - a trait sadly missing from the DNA of most commentators.

It never ceases to amaze me that various cretins express a desire to do violence to someone they've never met, probably never read, and all for expressing a personal opinion that has absolutely nothing to do with them. Book-shredding - now there's advanced thinking. You know you could go to a video store, check out a few films by Scorsese and Allen and burn them in the street

The whole interview is worth reading, even the Polanksi part, which isn't quoted in full here.

Vidal is a national treasure. No one is as frank. Period.
