It Bears Repeating

Posted by on Tue, Oct 27, 2009 at 11:22 AM

Way back at the beginning of October, I wrote about how Seattle Public Library is discussing budget cuts that would require most SPL branches to operate on the following schedule:

Monday, Tuesday: 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Wednesday, Thursday: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
CLOSED FRIDAY
Saturday: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
CLOSED SUNDAY

Well, over at Seattle Times, Mary Ann Gwinn finally picked up on the story yesterday. There will be a library board meeting tomorrow at the Central Library at 4:30 pm to listen to a report on the budget. And if you haven't voted and the library is an important issue to you, the Friends of the Library have a page up with candidate's statements on SPL budget cuts. (Weirdly, neither Mallahan nor McGinn responded to Friends of the Library.)

After what I've seen of the mammoth brain drain that is the Library Board in action, I have to say that it's almost certainly too late to stop these cuts for next year. But we can press the candidates to increase funding to the library in years to come.

Most of the candidates seem pro-library, and that is a win-win for the city. I am shocked that the two dipshits running for major have yet to comment.

I can honestly say I regret voting for McGinn. Next time I will hold on to my ballot until the very last moment.

Neither Mayoral Candidate chose to answer my question about this part of the budget in "Questionland" either. >:(

Neither candidate is interested in running the city, only in pontificating about their particular flavor of pie in the sky.

Where, exactly, would the money come from? What would you cut to keep the library open?

@4 oh I don't know, if only there was some kind of transportation project we can cut, say a "deep bore" tunnel.

You fucking stupid twat.

Paul, I'm suprised that you didn't bold the 6 pm of the closing hours for Wednesday and Thursday. That would really suck.

[Also, many branches are already open from 1 - 8 pm on Mon and Tue as well.]

Yeah, the closures on Fri/Sun suck, but the early closure on Weds/Thurs is a bad combination with that. It basically means that if you work a typical schedule, Monday and Tuesday are the only days you can go to your local library, because they close too early the other days.

It would be nice if, instead of closing early on Weds/Thurs, they would open later and close later.

@8 Yes, shifting the opening hours later would be nice for many people, but the library also provides essential services for seniors, day cares/moms of young children, unemployed people and others for whom morning hours are important.

Morning hours are important to some, evening hours are important to many others. Why prioritize the mornings?
