At a Mountlake Terrace city council candidate forum, the sitting mayor, Jerry Smith, explains why he will vote to reject Referendum 71:
As I've said before, excuses like these—and they've got several equally inscrutable arguments—are shields to hide people's bigotry. Homophobes trot them out as a plausible reasons to reject R-71—for the sake of religion, marriages, protecting families, children, for the principle of well-placed priorities, or because the law is unfair to straight something or others—without having to say they're homophobes. None of their arguments make sense. After you peel away the illogic, these people think gays are gross folks having poop sex, and the more we give gays equal rights, the more poop sex those gays are going to have. And more poop sex leads to more disease—never mind that the straight folks are having plenty of their own poop sex—and we don't want to the word to die of poopitis. They can't admit this, of course, because they hate lesbians just as much—and lesbians are having comparatively zero poop sex.

I attended this meeting, and I have to say this question was the most compelling portion of the forum.
Mayor Jerry Smith's response is dismaying, but I want to point out candidate Andrew Funk declined to comment immediately following two declarations of equal right for all. Not only does his political dodge show he is clearly in favor of restricting equal treatment under the law for all MLT citizens, but he's a coward when it comes to voicing his position on the matter.

@5 I am a little disappointed that domestic partnerships don't apply to heterosexual couples under the age of 62. As all these anti-gay bigots have illustrated, marriage is an exclusionary institution and as such, I would prefer not to be a part of it. I would much rather have a domestic partnership than a marriage, but it's an incredibly weak reason to not approve R-71.

Mr. Smith did not distinguish himself in his comments on Ref. 71. He sounded like a badly informed doody head.

Jerry Smith, the mayor of Mountlake Terrace Washington, is an idiot. He is an idiot not only because he is a bigot and homophobe, but also (primarily) because he lacks basic logic skills. I am disappointed in him, and ashamed for my city.
I was going to vote for him, for VERY good reasons - and now I am lost and don't know what to do. His opponent still has 2 years left of his term and is an equal idiot, bigot, racist, you-name-it, and is running against him because he got his feelings hurt when the council didn't appoint him mayor in January. There is just no winning.
To all, but especially good old Jerry - unmarried heterosexual couples can choose to get married and receive the rights same sex couples are fighting for. If they choose to remain unmarried they don't get them. Same sex couples do not have the option to get married which is why this issue is so important. I would also like to mention that same sex couples who do not choose to register as domestic partners ALSO do not get these protections.
It is just not that complicated. Drop the bullshit Jerry.
