"A mode of distribution going out of existence."

That's Josh Marshal's take on the news that daily newspaper circulation dropped by more than 10% in a single year.

I'm a big science fiction fan. It's kind of funny to read books that were written in the 50s and 60s that envision a "far future" with things like record players, audiotape, and film in it. Oh, and cigarette smokers too. Things have changed so much in the last 50 years that our society would be unrecognizable to a time traveler from back then. So why should we be surprised that printed newspapers would also be a part of that?

Don't get me wrong, I'm an old dinosaur and I'll miss my newspapers when they're gone, but this shouldn't be a big shock to anyone.

The Stranger, of course, will be immune. Right?

Exactly, #1. We should be applauding the demise of print media. It's wasteful, and useless. You know, when lightbulbs were invented, a lot of candlemakers lost their jobs. It was sad, but good.

It's on their website.

The news corporations aren't going out of business. It's just the printing presses that will eventually be mothballed.

Still, I've not yet found an electronic reader whose interface wasn't crap and price was reasonable, so I'll be buying books for a while. Newspapers, not so much.

What @7 said. I haven't found the electronic experience yet that would make me cancel my Spokesman subscription.
