Portland Gets HUMPed!

HUMPDX.jpg

There were two sold-out screenings of HUMP! 5 at Portland's Cinema 21 last night and there are two more sold-out screenings tonight. It was Portland's first ever HUMP! and—just like two weeks ago at On the Boards in Seattle—audiences laughed, gasped, cried, cheered as for Violet Uprising, The Password, Cyclust, Sex Moves 102, Citizen Came, Our Ruinous Love, ET2, and all the other films in HUMP. But Portland's audiences did one thing Seattle audiences couldn't do: knock back a drink during the show. In Oregon adults are allowed to enjoy more than once vice at a time—you can have a drink and watch porn or strippers down here—because Oregon treats adults like adults.

We're going to count Portland's votes tomorrow afternoon and we'll be announcing the winners of HUMP! 5—the two $2000 grand prizes along with the second- and third-place prizes—in the print editions of the Stranger and the Portland Mercury this week.

But Oregon's liquor laws are just as fucked as Washington's only in a different way. A friend and I were having drinks at a restaurant at Cannon Beach (yawn) when a waitress there kind of yelled at us for ordering a third round before ordering dinner. "State law says that I cannot serve you any more liquor until you order food," she proclaimed rather loudly - and we were nowhere drunk. It was rather embarrassing, really.

I have other Oregon examples. I won't catalog them here. But I hardly consider the episodes as being treated like an adult.

Here you're treated like a child. And it only gets worse from there.

Until I can pump my own gas, Oregon will continue to be a second-rate nanny state.

Dan, I noticed that two of the films on the roster didn't screen last night. What gives?

Each filmmaker got to choose whether they wanted their film to screen in Portland or just Seattle. Two people must have chosen not to.

@10 Well that's a serious bummer! Especially since one of the films, Incubus, is being promoted on the web.

"dan,

You really sound like the self-hating gay that posted those club threats last year. Seriously, your obsession with dan's profession as a sex columnist is far weirder than anything that he's done in his life.

"Until I can pump my own gas, Oregon will continue to be a second-rate nanny state. "

Why do they do that anyway?

"@ 5: You WANT to pump your own gas? Jesus. "

Yes, it's absolutely weird.

@9 you're on your way to the nephew's graduation and you want to allow yourself some time 'cuz you're not sure where the place is but you neeeed to gas up. So you pull up and you wait and you wait and you wait and you wait and the one guy who's pumping gas has five other cars ahead of you and you wait and you wait and you wait and WHY can't you just get out and pump it yourself? 'Cuz you can't.

Yes, not pumping ones own gas is annoying, but in a dozen years I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes.

And, I'd still choose being able to order a pizza and beer at the theater, if I felt inclined, than pumping my own gas. Just my $0.02.

As someone who spent many weekend evenings at Cinema 21 as a teenager, I'm a little disappointed that now all their 7 p.m.+ shows are 21 and over only. Yes, adults can drink beer there, but that means teens can't go at all.

Or we could just not have either stupid regulation.

I agree with 15. I entered a video for HUMP this year, but I am younger than 21. Luckily I was able to attend the festival in Seattle.

Bauhaus I,
Oregon does not have a law requiring food before a third round of drinks. More than likely, that is a house policy.
