Hello? Sound Transit? Can Seattle's light rail trains push one of these things around?

The other day I saw a Microsoft transit bus with a huge trailer for bikes behind it.

I wonder why Metro or ST doesn't incorporate increased cross-lake bike capacity? That is one of the main reason my girlfriend drives to her job over there, since she's afraid of missing the bus.

@1 Every bus that crosses the bridge is supposed to stop for bikers. They'll drop the biker at the first cross bridge stop, or sometimes all the way to Microsoft if that's where they're supposed to terminate.

If only there were some kind of means to attach an engine directly to the bike itself, rather than have to carry the bike on a motor vehicle.

@3 you might have to add another couple wheels for stability, as engines are heavy - and maybe a little plastic or metal fairing to provide comfort for the rider; a wind shield, if you will.

@3 Yes, and if only you could attach a jet engine to your car when you needed to get across the country.

I saw a tourist train in rural Germany this summer, running only on weekends between Bremen and Worpswede: only three cars, and the middle one was for the bikes of everybody in the front and rear ones. So freaking cool.

Can they?

Yes.

Will they?

No. Not so long as dickheads from the eastside are on the ST Board.

@2 The problem is with only 3 bike spots a lot of bike racks fill up.

God Dammed socialists. Pictures like that make me sick. Why is their government denying them the right to drive a car! It's no wonder they're not the Greatest country on earth like America. They pay higher taxes, they have some horrible socialized health care system where people can be treated for health issues with out fear of personal bankruptcy, their educational costs are by in large taken care of and you want US Americans to live like that! Shocking and disgusting.

@2 & 8- They fill up in the summer. During the winter it's usually not a problem.

They're only supposed to give you a free ride to the Evergreen point, Yarrow and East Base stations (Eastbound) or Mountlake (Westbound). In the evening there are very few out of service buses Westbound.

If you think that lots of idiotic Seattle drivers turn left in front of trains now, just imagine the carnage with 15 feet of bike rack leading the way. It would be a demolition derby, and it would be spectacular.

@11 Yeah, and what's up with "car ferries"? Is it a car, or is it a ferry?! Make up your mind!

Bikes . . . pfft. I'm going with giant flying-saucer-shaped helium balloons.

The reason they have the bike rack is that the railway climbs a 17% grade for some of its trip:

Indeed, it's a cog railway. Pike/Pine needs one of those, obviously.

My beef is with the "fake" bikers...people who ride their bike four blocks to a bus stop, put the bike on the rack and ride the bus the 15 blocks to the stop closest to their house, get off the bus and unload the bike and ride the bike the three blocks to their home...I can understand not wanting to ride your bike up one of our many, many steep hills or maybe just being tired and not up to it once in awhile, but I see people do this shit all the time...and then brag about their tiny carbon footprint.

@21- You'd rather they drove a car?

"Bike to Work Day" pisses me off. They hand out Clif Bars and stuff on a nice sunny spring day and a bunch of people dust off their bikes for their annual attempt to do something good with their life. In the meantime, ride to work in the dark, in the rain, on the packed ice, etc... and I don't get diddly-squat. I want them to hand out gold stars and rain coats in early February.

Westlake, son! 23
@3 This is what one might call a last mile problem. Take a hub transit out along a spoke far enough and you'll need a way to get from the spoke to your destination. You could walk a two miles, but most people won't because it takes 45 minutes. Time to whip out the car. Orrrrrrrrrr you could jump on a bike and it takes 10 minutes.

all we'd need to do is send the entire country back to driving school for 6 months AND require rider training for cyclists (like the germans do), and this would make sense.

while we're at it, lets make sure there's bier kiosks around the city who are required by law to serve in real glass, and set up little bakeries on every corner with delicious cucumber sandwiches.

mmm, cucumber sandwiches.

@22 - I feel you. Bike-to-work day in Boulder brings out the once-a-year riders like none other. There're actually bike traffic jams on multi-use paths.

Given how many drivers have turned left into the train, I'd prefer the bike trailer be in the back (with a nice little rain shield to boot).
