If You Live in a Home with a View, Chances Are You're a Mallahan Supporter

36thDistrictPrimary.jpg

Look at this map. (Here it is with streets.) This is the 36th Legislative District—Discovery Park, Magnolia, Golden Gardens, Ballard, Fremont, Greenwood, Phinney Ridge, Green Lake. (That squared off white blotch in the center up top is the lake.) There's a room with huge maps like this hanging on the walls at McGinn for Mayor headquarters—the six legislative districts in Seattle. Here, the 36th has been divided up by precinct, and color-coded according to how each precinct voted in the mayor's race in the primary. Green is Joe Mallahan, blue is Mike McGinn, and pink-orange is Nickels.

"So pretty much anywhere with a view Mallahan won," a McGinn (volunteer) staffer mentioned the other night. "Look at Ballard. On one side of Holman Road, you probably voted for Mike. On the other side of Holman Road, you probably voted for Joe."

What a silly non-sequitur.

Class warfare from McGinn. Nice.

If you live in a body with a brain, you are a Mallahan supporter as well.

If you're a sketchy looking Stranger staffer with a meth habit and a fixie, then you <3, <3, <3 McGinn.

If you have mind and care about Seattle you are desperately praying someone qualified will run for mayor of Seattle in 4 years. Sadly we don't have that choice this time around.

You're so insightful, Christopher. Is this the first time you've ever looked at a voter map?

This just in--people with different economic situations vote differently. Story at 11!

So in other words, if you're in any part of the city with any reasonable population density that isn't actually a suburb that snuck into the city...

...you support McGinn.

It seems Mallahan picked up 5 points on the GREAT FLIP FLOP.

Without money, ah, such virtue - how will Mc Ginn go on the air to help his campaign?

And, how will he pay for a good haircut, beard trim?

Toast is the term. Mc Ginn is toast.

I never thought of this until I saw the map, but you could surmise that the real purpose of the McGinn's campaign is to stop the flow of traffic along Aurora as it flows through his Greenwood community.

So his two achievements will be to get some sidewalks and turn Aurora into parking lot. Nice.

Those views --not too surprisingly-- also correspond to high property costs/values.

"The rich support Mallahan?" Shocking!!!
(Wake me up when you have some new news to report.)

@ 1, it can only be a non-sequitur if it's following something.

Anyone know where there's a similar Bush/Kerry, Obama/McCain, or Rossi/Gregoire map? I'm guessing they pretty much match these ones.

@12 Gregoire has already endorsed Mallahan, and Obama is making his announcement next week, but don't tell anybody.

@11: True, that's one definition. But Wikipedia notes that it can also mean a logical fallacy.

I don't think I get this map.

Christopher, you claim that the "squared off white blotch in the center up top" is Greenlake. That would mean that Greenlake sits next to 15th Ave NW.

Is this map just really distorted? To me, Greenlake is not featured in the map.

Jesus, spend much time @ McGinn HQ? Why don't you just let McGinn write stories about himself?

Looks like Joe has his neighbors at 37th and Densmore voting for him. Apparently those are the three blocks he's actually visited.

Unless something has drastically changed this year, the 36th LD does not contain Greenlake. Phinney Ridge is as close as it gets....

Oh, fer chrissake. Green Lake? See that eastern edge? That's Greenwood Avenue from the top down to where it sticks out to the right. That's 65th. The eastern edge of the sticky-out bit is Aurora, just a few blocks of it. The big blue in the bottom corner? Woodland Park Zoo. Below that, it's the ship canal, Westlake, and Stewart Street downtown. The big white blotch? That's the fucking QFC and Safeway.

Green Lake. I swear to god.

Those people in the million-dollar bungalows on the west slope of Phinney will be surprised to hear that they are low-income (@10) and don't have views (original post).

@15 & 20 are correct. I suspect Christopher misread "Green Lake" for "Greenwood, Lake Union".

Jesus people... that's a map of (much of) NW Seattle.

It depicts ballard, greenwood, interbay, queen anne and magnolia (with a little bit of downtown showing in the bottom right corner).

Yep, that white block is definitely not Green Lake...only a tiny tip of Southwest Green Lake is bordered by the Eastern edge 36th Legislative District.

There's no correspondence between this map and presidential voting patterns. In 2004 Kerry carried all but one precinct in the entire city. I heard Dwight Pelz say this at the Democratic caucus in March 2008. Maybe Obama carried all the precincts?

This map is of McGinn's district. Much more interesting would be maps in other parts of the city.

Not much useful journalism in the Stranger, ever.
