Crime and Punishment: So Cute!

Kurutta has run a few pages of the long-out-of-print English translation of Osamu Tezuka's adaptation of Crime and Punishment. After watching the abysmal wreck that is the upcoming Astro Boy movie, it's nice to be reminded of Tezuka's greatness. These few pages show his exceptional ability to render the internal emotions of a character (in this case, guilt) as an external process (the moth-and-flame-sequence). I especially love his adorable Raskolnikov, at right.

I can't see a nose without thinking "anti-semitism"

I just wanted to mention that I love everything I've read of his. Apollo's Song, MW, Ode to Kirihito, Phoenix are so fucking wonderful.
The complete list is frightening

The Amazing Jim 3
Didn't I see this prophesized in the movie 'Major League'?

Instead of seeing Astro Boy, go watch his version of Metropolis. The plot really has nothing to do with Fritz Lang's version, but the soundtrack is incredible, it's beautifully animated and the story is pretty good.

Raskolnikov should never be adorable.

@4: You beat me to the recommendation. Completely beautiful movie. And as far as RDM's concern about anti-semitic characters, there is a major character in it with a big nose, but as far as I can remember he's an anthropomorphized cockatoo, so it's okay.

I'd've been Raskolnikov, but Mother Nature ripped me off.

Seriously, did you see the thing in the NYT Book Review last week about R. Sikoryak's new book, including his Bob Kane-style take on "Crime and Punishment"? Drawn & Quarterly are publishing all the books that Fantagraphics should be putting out.

@5: Just be happy he wasn't portrayed as a cute furry animal instead of a dark haired Little Prince.

Tezuka is overrated.
